How would you guys in France handle that situation? Would you be more or less sensitive to the request of these Muslims?

We are a major melting pot here by design with many religions. Even Satanism wants its representation. It's difficult to accommodate everyone but I do understand people wanting to be included also. Hard decision no matter what you decide knowing a certain amount of people will feel mistreated and left out.

Honestly, confronted to such a situation, french politicians would probably reject the claim of the muslims, pretending that these holidays christians have come from tradition, not religion (which, to me, would be a huge hypocrisy).

Less and less, sadly.
Islamophobia is on the rise.
And there was always some kind of creeping anti-semitism, usually low but which happens to have spikes from times to times, one of these spikes being now (partly because of the Israel-Palesine conflict that pisses off many muslims, to the point wher some become anti-semitic but this is not the only reason to that spike).

It's not secret that intolerance of any kind is on the rise in times of economical crisis : people are looking for someone to blame. Some wil blame the muslims, some will blame the jewish, etc.

It seems like it was the right decision made for the wrong reasons. It's more vindictive than wanting to remain neutral.

I can see not wanting to recognize any religion because it's best for a school to stay out of it. I could also see it as a means of keeping things from getting out of control if you had to potentially recognize dozens of religions or their variants to make things equal.

This seems more like them taking the nuclear option as a means of sticking it to people that don't believe as they do.

Compared to that America sounds like a bastion of tolerance. No matter where you live you have human nature to account for. Considering the diversity we have in America I think we do pretty good. I can walk out of my house on a regular basis and see Muslim women dressing in whatever religious garb they choose, Jews can wear yarmulkes proudly on their heads, and Christians can wear crosses as large and gaudy as they like too. Could be worse and usually is in other countries if you house so many that are so different.

The thing is, what happens in the US with the mexican immigration happens here with the North Africa immigration, with things being even more complicated due to the diffrence of religion (and the fact that islam has a very bad reputation doesn't help).

No offense but I'll take our immigrants over yours any day. Hispanics are Catholic and mostly hard working. Every immigrant group has their crime in their initial generations. I can plainly and honestly say I like our Mexicans and Central Americans. They work when many others would rather receive charity. We don't worry about them turning on us and becoming terrorists. Most want the same things in life we do.

Here's another thing (besides you not proving that Muslims want the school closed). Days are added to and subtracted from the calendar for snow days. Half days happen too. Student athletes miss class time to travel to sporting events. They aren't asking for Halal in the cafeterias, just a day off for their holiday. Give it to them.
