Love Bugs

This is something we are inundated with this time of year. They swarm over everything and are attracted to white T-shirts. Open the door and a few fly in. I've literally walked around the outside of the house spraying hundreds just to have them all back by the time I got back to where I started.

Adults seem attracted to bright white and yellow objects. Lovebugs are also attracted to cars and fresh paint. They confuse exhaust fumes and paint with odors from decaying material, where they lay their eggs.

Upon reaching maturity the love bug spends the entirety of its life copulating with its mate, hence its numerous romantic nick names. The male and female attach themselves at the rear of the abdomen and remain that way at all times, even in flight.

Because airborne love bugs are drawn in enormous numbers to roadways, they die en masse on automobile windshields, hoods, and radiator grills. If left for more than an hour or two, the remains become dried and extremely difficult to remove, and their acidity pits etches automotive paint and chrome
