Long-term cannabis use may blunt the brain's motivation system

Researchers found that dopamine levels in a part of the brain called the striatum were lower in people who smoke more cannabis and those who began taking the drug at a younger age.

They suggest this finding could explain why some cannabis users appear to lack motivation to work or pursue their normal interests.

The study, by scientists at Imperial College London, UCL and King’s College London, was funded by the Medical Research Council and published in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

The researchers used PET brain imaging to look at dopamine production in the striatum of 19 regular cannabis users and 19 non-users of matching age and sex.

The cannabis users in the study had all experienced psychotic-like symptoms while smoking the drug, such as experiencing strange sensations or having bizarre thoughts like feeling as though they are being threatened by an unknown force.

The researchers expected that dopamine production might be higher in this group, since increased dopamine production has been linked with psychosis. Instead, they found the opposite effect.

The cannabis users in the study had their first experience with the drug between the ages of 12 and 18. There was a trend for lower dopamine levels in those who started earlier, and also in those who smoke more cannabis. The researchers say these findings suggest that cannabis use may be the cause of the difference in dopamine levels.

The lowest dopamine levels were seen in users who meet diagnostic criteria for cannabis abuse or dependence, raising the possibility that this measure could provide a marker of addiction severity.

Previous research has shown that cannabis users have a higher risk of mental illnesses that involve repeated episodes of psychosis, such as schizophrenia.

“It has been assumed that cannabis increases the risk of schizophrenia by inducing the same effects on the dopamine system that we see in schizophrenia, but this hasn’t been studied in active cannabis users until now,” said Dr Michael Bloomfield, from the Institute of Clinical Sciences at Imperial, who led the study.

“The results weren’t what we expected, but they tie in with previous research on addiction, which has found that substance abusers – people who are dependent on cocaine or amphetamine, for example – have altered dopamine systems.

“Although we only looked at cannabis users who have had psychotic-like experiences while using the drug, we think the findings would apply to cannabis users in general, since we didn’t see a stronger effect in the subjects who have more psychotic-like symptoms. This needs to be tested though.

“It could also explain the ‘amotivational syndrome’ which has been described in cannabis users, but whether such a syndrome exists is controversial.”

Other studies have looked at dopamine release in former cannabis users and not seen differences with people who haven’t taken cannabis, suggesting that the effects seen in this study are likely to be reversible.

I know plenty of people who are engineers, business owners, etc that smoke lots of weed and are highly motivated.

I definitely think the fact that this study targets pot smokers that started between age 12-18 is interesting.
I am an avid supporter and user of medical marijuana but the concept of starting at an age like 12-16 is scary to me.. I would want to know my own body and mind more thoroughly before throwing in anything that alters your perception.. even if that's general medication.
I did start smoking marijuana casually when I was about 17, but I was already supporting myself and working full time. I can't imagine having smoked weed while I was still in school or living with my parents or caught up in general teenage bullshit.

Yeah right. Here's a list of people who are or were regular pot smokers and they seemed to fare all right.

Bill Gates? Steve Jobs? Carl Sagan? Willie Nelson? Abraham Lincoln? The list goes on and on. I personally know plenty of successful business people in my industry who are regular pot smokers. I also know plenty of losers who smoke pot. I don't think there are any logical conclusions that prove that smoking pot makes you into a lazy, complacent and apathetic sonofabitch. By the same token, smoking pot doesn't guarantee the type of motivation that some of the people list happen to possess either, obviously.

I'm sure there are tons of pot smokers who lack motivation. I'm also quite certain that there are many non-pot smokers who are lazy and unmotivated. Motivation is something you either have or don't have in my experience regardless of your personal vices. Although interesting, I don't put much stock in this study.

I haven't smoked it since college, but I would happy to take part in a test group.

Here's hoping they never do a study on motivation levels and their correlation with television, video games, food, school, drinking, BBQ, watching sports, work, hot summer days, cold winter days, fixing up the house, or surfing the Internet. :1orglaugh

I would say pot has some competition, but it might be more that people are generally lazy when they can get away with it.

Yeah, and long term drinking can cause you to be a miserable, half wit too...but I've never heard of an old stoner blazing up, and then smacking around his wife, because he's to high. There are plenty of drugs the F.D.A. has claimed were perfectly safe, and then years later it turns out they harmed people. Acetaminophen is the perfect example, now they've restricted it's dosage in all narcotic pain medications, after finding out it will destroy your liver. I take pain meds for Arthritis, and they don't help nearly as much as weed has, so at 50, a grown man, I can't smoke a doobie, because of my job...but it's perfectly acceptable to ruin my liver. More importantly, who in the fuck is the government, that they can regulate a fucking plant? It was harder to quit smoking cigarettes, then weed.

Thank you. What pisses me off the most though, are these self righteous assholes in the government...on both sides...that you JUST FUCKING KNOW, have been in big pharmaceuticals pockets, and scream about weed being a gateway drug, then the cocksuckers sit down with their peers, and decide our fate, over a 4 martini lunch...or get drunk on expensive scotch, and drown girls in their cars...or have families that made their fortunes on bootlegging, and raise children that fight corruption. The hypocrisy of it all has to end. I've about fucking had it.
