Liberalism is all about mediocrity and shittiness

which is why I'm no longer a liberal as I was in my late teens and early 20s.

Excellence is to be looked down upon and ultimately punished. "You didn't build that."

Egalitarianism - equally miserable except for the liberal elites in their ivory towers.

Liberalism is for banana republics and the likes of Harry Belafonte we've had in the White House for two terms.

Come, Mister tally man, tally me banana

Rugged individualism is America.

Bring back the guillotine and give the left a taste of their own medicine.

Extreme politics both ways is twisted.

You've made this quite clear with numerous posts in the past so not sure what prompted this latest outburst. I could counter by advocating that conservatism is all about bigotry and fear but to make such a broad general statement wouldn't be any more appropriate than yours is about liberals. Until we can see each other as individuals without hanging absolute labels on each of us we really shouldn't be making such broad generalizations about any group from my perspective but by all means rant away if it makes you feel better. I would agree with z-fowl....extremism on the left or the right is definitely twisted. Way too much of each in recent years....at least from those who make the most noise about same. Like most things in life, moderation is the key as far as I am concerned.

And yet you still haven't cast a vote for AHOTY. I are disappoint.

I agree with you on seeing each other as individuals but as far as ideology goes, is there a fundamental distinction between the left and the right? Between liberals and conservatives? And if I had made the exact same rant against the right, would you have chimed in? Be honest.

Simple explanation. He's an ideologue.

simple explanation. you don't know shit about me.

You don't know what liberalism really is, what it stands for so stop talking about things you're clueless about.

Conservatives should remember some of the noteworthy achievements promoted by liberals.

They should keep in mind the abolitionist movement and the death of slavery, the civil rights movement of the twentieth century, women's suffrage, and the Social Security Act, all liberal achievements.

Most conservatives today, maybe even the radicals, think well of the G.I. Bill that enabled World War II vets to get a university education, the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Europe and turned enemies into allies, and the interstate highway system — all liberal ideas.

The 40-hour workweek, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Weather Service, the Morrill Act that made state universities possible, the Panama Canal, the National Institutes of Health, the end of child labor, government grants for scientific research, truth-in-advertising laws, the National Institutes of Health, the Center for Disease Control, and on and on — all liberal ideas few of us would want to do without.

I think pretty much everything on that list could be attributed to one side or the other with the exceptions of the Social Security Act and the Civil Rights movement. Social Security is failing and it should. It's the beginning of the welfare state and government telling people they don't know how to take care of themselves. Which, to be fair, is true about certain segments of society. I wouldn't call the state of it today an achievement. FDR was an asshole and he lived his entire adult life on an allowance because he didn't understand how money works in the real world. Same could be said of most career politicians.

The interstate highway system was championed by several presidents because they all knew the value, regardless of ideology. Who's name is rightfully assigned to it? Eisenhower? I would hardly think of him as a liberal.

But putting split hairs aside, do you honestly believe none of these things would have happened one way or another?

Liberalism and conservatism are political philosophies and most certainly differ in many ways. However, "shittiness" is not a descriptor that I would generally apply to either. You lose credibility when you make such statements. And, to answer your question, yes I would and in fact have defended conservatism when appropriate, much to the chagrin of some of those who march in lockstep to the left-wing drumbeat.

What happened to real "conservatism?" Ya know, the kind that wanted to stay out of foreign affairs if possible and avoid bombing away their problems? Too busy worried about protecting the rights of a puddle of goo? In church asking a God that doesn't exist to solve their problems? Scaring white people into thinking blacks are stealing all their money in taxes?

What is it?

Dear stroct machine,

this thread was started just as a little rant and to vent anger, I believe is safe to presume.

So I won't partake any further. You made your point.

American conservatism as it used to be died long ago. I think it died with the RTeagan Doctrine which put an end to conservative isolationism. Since then, every other component of american conservatism fade away.

Conservatism is now the party of fear and control it is approaching a religious ideology in its shortsightedness and holier than thou attitude.

Perhaps far-left liberals fall into that definition but take me and Jagger as prime examples of liberals in red states and you couldn't be any more off point. But that's alright, I ain't mad atcha, it's the far left loons that give us all a bad name and I would love to clean up the Democratic Party and force the loons to either moderate their asses or get the fuck out, reach out to our brethren on the other side of the political spectrum, appeal to them to do the same with their far-right loons and hopefully forge forward with common ground beneath our feet and fix the mess in this country once and for all. I'm not optimistic.
