Wait, what happens on 09/09/09 then?
Not only are we in an information age, we're in an age where "news" has been transformed into entertainment, and so everywhere we go, we're being bombarded from more angles than ever with terror, humor, opinion, etc. Sensationalism is not just a trend in reporting- it's an epidemic. It is very hard to find straight news today with no slant on it, but they all want to show us the latest in the freak show, and since violent and destructive things are more interesting to look at than say... flowers growing, or really anything good, that's what we get a steady diet of.
Violence? You mean... like, in the middle ages? Or the Spanish Inquisition? The killing fields? As long as there are 2 humans on this planet, there's going to be violence. Our media's ability to immediately transmit it to you anywhere in the world does not mean there's more of it. Case in point- I live in a city, hundreds of thousands of people, and I make it through almost every single day without a violent act around me. The same could be said of my friends, family, and co-workers. You'd think if violence was exponentially on the rise, someone I know would be involved in, or at least witness some violence at some point. So again- the ability to immediately get news from anywhere in the world, coupled with the fact that sensationalized news (read- violent, destructive) sells better means---
Yes- it's an increase in reporting it.
The Mayan calendar- probably not an accurate prediction of the end of the world. 8/8/8, probably not the changing of anything. This is the same shit that happens every time the planets line up, etc. Remember how 6/6/06 was supposed to be the end?
How about 8/8/88 20 years ago- nothing blew up. Y2K, anyone?
For some time to come, we're going to have a sun that rises in the east, and sets in the west. Humankind is both blessed and cursed with an imagination.
