Many top movie stars are lining up to work with Terrence Malick after he returned from a self-imposed 20 year hiatus from directing. However, a lot of actors he has worked with have been critical about his directing/editing style, saying that the narrative of the film gets lost in all the long poetic shots that he uses. He also ends up editing much of the actors' dialogue and performances out of his films. Is Malick overrated as a director? Why or why not?

It's hard to say, I think. I've only ever seen Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line, and out of the two I only enjoyed the former. His movies take a fair amount of time to be fully immersed in, and it is possible to be distracted by the scenery and and spectacle. I've been meaning to see Badlands because I enjoy his earlier work, and find I'm not as removed from the story as I was with his later films. He is indeed notorious for massive amounts of film leading to massive amounts of editing, but I think that people (actors) have to be prepared for him to deem anything as "unnecessary" and remove it. For all his finickiness and subtle philosophical themes that can be overlooked or overwhelming, I do think he is a director who has a great amount of talent, and people seem to enjoy his work.

I don't think he is. He is a master storyteller much like Scorsese, Hitchcock, and Orson Welles is and he's made some very good films like Badlands, Days Of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and the The Tree Of Life. He is also a very private guy so again I don't think he is an overrated filmmaker but he is surely one of the best out there imo.

Don't ever compare this jagg off to Scorsese, Hitchcock, or to Welles. His films are the worst, and the reason is because he writes them, hence none of his movies have won an academy award.

A big fat fucking NO!

He is the quintessential definition of the term "artist" when it comes to film making, and anyone that doesn't realize that just doesn't get it.

Academy Awards don't mean ****. Hitchcock was named the greatest filmmaker ever and he has never won an Academy Award, DGA or Palma D'or. Have you seen Days Of Heaven or The Tree Of Life? Critics and fans have called those films a masterpiece. Let me guess you like watching those stupid slapstick pictures but can't sit down and enjoy a mature, brilliant Terrence Malick picture? Man you got to understand things from a diff angle and appreciate him a respected filmmaker.
