Is MTV ruining our minds and community?

For the longest time, I always stated the fact the MTV has been hurting the world. In the early 80's, MTV was what is suppose to be.....Music videos. Today, its TV shows about rich kids and how they hate to do work or how its cool to hate your parents. It upsets me. During the elections in november, MTV had Puff Daddy telling people to "Vote or Die!" I'm sorry, I don't need a rapper telling me who to vote for, let alone some one that doesn't have a GED.

Another show that made me upset was a show called "Rich Girls". It was about two spoiled brats that got what ever they wanted. One episode was Tommy Hilfigers daughter crying because she had to work after high school.

My sweet sixteen was another show that showed our youth its ok to tell your parents that you hate them if they don't get the dream car or the party you want. If I ever told my parents "Fuck You" for not getting me a car, I would be out of the house in a heart beat.

Am I alone on this? You guys and gals let me know if this bothers you as well.

I don't get MTV at my place, but i do agree with you. The music channel we've got here is airing a lot of those shows, and they all suck big time.
Fox is not helping either with stupid shows like "Princes of Malibu" and such...

Seing as Sean Combs was a student at Howard University* in Washington DC for over two years, I'd say you're completely and utterly uninformed on this and any number of other subjects.

*And yes, Combs does have his high school diploma.

Well, I've always hated MTV from day 1 and I figured way back then that it was probably always going to suck. What pisses me off is that about 10 years ago, VH1 was a fairly decent channel. Music programming, more oriented to adults without ADD. But no, now they're catering to the bubble gum crowd. Now it's just a jobs program for mediocre comedians and washed up 80's has beens. There are no good music channels, and everyone who tries to make one eventually sells out to Britney Spears' and Paris Hiltons shoe collection.

I quit watching MTV a long time ago, about when such lame shows such as "The Real World", "and "Road Rules" dominated everybody's collective stupidity. Then, to make matters worse, other stations thought that these shows needed to be made in a variety of different subjects. Such shows as "Survivor", "Fear Factor", and "American Idol" were spawned. In essence, bubblegum programming ended up becoming everyone programming, because there is almost always a reality show that will find someone's attention.
In a nutshell, MTV created reality TV, the useless drivel that ruins TV today.

There are plenty of times when I just need to totally relax and do nothing, so MTV can often fill the bill. I actually prefer to watch some of the reality shows to 90some% of the video garbage. (I won't complain about seeing Jessica's chest - ever.)

What MTV did ruin (at least changed) is the marketing of music. Talented, unphotogenic bands and muscians have a much harder time to ever get national or world airplay. (Think CCR or any of a bucketful of preMTV bands would have been signed looking the way they (naturally) looked??) :2 cents:

lol i get mtv... rarely watch it, unless its a good music video that cathces my attention... or a hot music video that catches my attention...

i will usually only stay on it for those reasons

MTV is not hurting the world, it's hurting those around the world who tune into it which basicily are young people. The up and coming generations of 12 to 20 year olds who might not go else where for their news

Believe it or not, at age 27 I don't watch MTV. I'd say that I probably outgrew it

Somewhere around 10 years ago MTV jumped on this road of sucking ass & blatent commercialism that I couldn't deal with.

Gave up watching after programmes like "Jackass" got aired.

While I do catch some MTV Bass at times like "Pimp My Ride," I stopped watching that after a UK version (with Tim Westwood, no less) was aired. Also MTV Bass (and other music channels like B4, Kiss & Channel U), seem to think that black music is all gansta rap cussing and/or eliminating your rivals and treating women like Ho's.

Most of the music channels bore me now, they're all so inter-changeable.

What I'd like is a music channel that:
1) doesn't fawn over so-called popstars (ie: the latest wannabe pretty-boy/girl groups), by asking asinine questions;
2) conduct surveys that usually cater to the latest flavour-of-the-month or music/lifestyle trend currently considered popular and
3) remember that just because popular music is commercially viable, it's also safe and boring. One should always keep an ear to other music trends. After all, Hip-hop, House music & Grunge didn't begin on MTV.

Viacom, the company that runs MTV bought and took over BET.

That explains the simular suckiness between the two

I don't hate MTV at all, I watch it a lot. Pimp my ride, PoweRgirls, Punk'd, Newlyweds, it's all good/ Sometimes I just to want to see something funny and relaxing. Especially after a Freeones night out like last friday :)

Always the same music is starting to irritate me though. But, ALL the music channels that we have on TV are all owned by Viacom at this moment. Quite annoying.

i stopped watching mtv long long ago cos now it s playing in the cable tv!
not that i used to watch a lot.after all the music i listen to isnt played a lot on this channel!!!
so i think that mtv cannot ruin my mind!!! :D
if it did , i would simply stop watching it!!!

I'm only into The Real World, and sometimes Pimp My Ride. I don't watch the video's anymore. and if i want to listen to the music on tv...i have Sirius satellite.
