Iraqi blast damages Shia shrine

It's good to be the king...
Shi'ite leaders have called for protests and seven days of mourning after a bomb ****** in Iraq badly damaged a major Shi'ite shrine in the Iraqi city of Samarra, 90km (60 miles) north of Baghdad (Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim al-Jaafari declared three days of mourning and described the blast as an ****** on all Muslims).

The ****** was almost certainly designed to raise the existing tensions between the majority Shia and minority Sunni populations. Thousands of demonstrators gathered near the bombed shrine, waving Iraqi flags, Shi'ite religious banners and copies of the Koran.

The al-Askari shrine, part of the Imam Ali al-Hadi mausoleum, is one of Shia Islam's holiest sites. The compound contains the remains of the 10th and 11th imams, reputed to be direct descendants of the Prophet Muhammad.

[edit] I'm trying damn hard not to feel cynical & insensitive (especially since it's unclear if there are any casualties), but I wonder what the global reaction will be amongst those Islamic extremists who recently wanted to ****** some cartoonists?
