internet. freedom. the end.

imagine a "pearl harbor of the internet". a surprise cyber attack that leaves america without internet communications for several days. the economic consequences would be unimaginable. the government would probably be able to rally a lot of support for tighter security of the internet, a known haven for terrorists. anyone who went without the convenience of instant porn, email, or un-biased news for a few days would welcome the quickest path to "normalcy". security? instead of a "pearl harbor", think "gulf of tonkin".

I don't know if it was fixed or not, but not too long ago there was some research that showed that a few well-placed DDoS attacks could pretty much take down the entire net. Flooding a couple of routers can cause some very nasty ripples in a TCP network.

The movies like to portray Hackers as these "all-knowing Computer Gods" who can ingeniously (moustache-twirling) takedown "systems" with a few clicks on the keyboard.

The reality is far different....do you know how I know...IT WOULD BE DONE ALREADY!

I don't trust anything coming from Dubya or his administration anymore. I don't care what he thinks is a serious threat anymore.

I'd love for the internet to get shut down worldwide for a few days, just to see what happens.

It might not be such a bad thing.

I can see us all coming out of our dungeons and squinting at the sun!

Or more likely, we'd just turn on the TV!

Not really ...

Nope, not really, hasn't been a reality for probably a good 10-15 years now. A "few well placed attacks" won't do anything. It has to be absolutely massive and well distributed.

The only time I noted a few, stupid setups were in the mid-to-late '90s. Microsoft was one of them, as late as 2000 -- back then it was laughable, take down one subnet, everything that even is remotely associated with Microsoft dies. But even Microsoft has outsourced quite a bit of its own infrastructure to several, different firms now, and they don't inter-link so much anymore.

He he he ;)

Seriously now, I think people confuse capacity with services. Any significant capacity interruption could cause major disruptions. But most of the root services of the Internet and routing infrastructure were designed to avoid Internet-wide outages.

Doesn't mean there won't be compromises. Doesn't mean there won't be capacity issues. But it does mean the entire Internet itself can be taken down.

Isn't this the plot of Die Hard 4?

Once o'bamma and his henchmen suppress free expression radio programming I think that its a safe bet that they're also going after the internet and free expression. . . . Under the guise of "SECURITY" you understand. :crash:

The internet? Loosely held together, mostly controlled if they who wish it... wish it.

Yet if they want to reap the benefits of a WorldWideWeb, they wouldnt dare try to control it. It's safe for the foreseeable future.

people would have to jerk off to DVDs for a few days. the horror!:(
