In Los Angeles, I Have Never Seen So Many Expired Vehicle Registration Tags

A few months back I mentioned I had an issue smog checking my truck because I got a new battery. For about 2 weeks I was driving with expired tags. This is unusual for me so I was a bit conscious of it when I drove. Then I started noticing just how many vehicles had the same green expired tag on their cars. Seemed like almost 10% of the drivers had expired tags and still do. I see rich people with fancy expensive cars and poor people with dilapidated hoopties both rocking their expired tags. I can't figure it out. If your registration is paid late there is a fee. Also, why would someone want to allow the police to pull them over at any time? Nothing but a buncha bums and jabronis along with my fine self remaining out here.

If one works from home a majority of the time - they only "really" drive for groceries, pharmaceuticals, and maybe to dine out. Me-thinks for most folks, it has slipped their mind. (I know that happened with me, regarding changing the oil!)

I've forgotten on occasion too. I usually get mine for 2 years now, and the last time I renewed my license, I got it for 8 years.

I hope the absent-minded idiots didn't forget to pay for their car insurance too. This place gets more lawless and third world looking by the day.

I don't get pulled over a lot, but I get followed for a little while, here and there. Probably because of the giant, obnoxious sticker in my window.

In the almost 8 years it's been in my window, I've gotten 3 thumbs down from other drives on the road, and more thumbs up, or air horn blasts, then I can even begin to count. I even had a guy stop, knock on my door, and ask where to get it.

It's like a scratcher ticket for the cops for Christ's sake. Hell, if I was a cop I'd just see it as "Shit man, do you want me to shake your tree? Because that's what we do." - such is the peril of specializations and misaligned priorities in community policing.
Keeping my old D cells in a coffee can on the passenger side footwell. Karma is swift. And copper-topped.

Could it be Covid-related? Here in Ontario during the worst of the outbreak, the province said that you didn't need to renew your plate stickers to avoid having people standing in lines etc. Seems to me it was nearly two years where we didn't need to renew. Of course, now we do again and that reminds me, my tags are due in a few months.

I don't know how other states work, but I can't imagine it's much different. Here in Ohio, they send out a letter well in advance of expiration, so you can get the tags by mail. In Ohio, we have something called AIM testing. It's a pollution emissions test. It's a free pain in the ass hoop we have to jump through every other year. They give you time to do that, send in the paper, and a payment, and they send you a tag, which you can get for 2 years. They also give you a grace period on being expired. I forgot how long the grace period is, but it's no more then 30 days.

I think they just don't care, and are riding it out until they get caught, knowing the worse that's going to happen is a warning, and the requirement to prove they fixed it. Don't forget, in the land of wokeness, you get released without bail for almost every crime, short of murder.

Can't fault the DMV on this one. I renew over the internet and usually get my tags in the mail in about a week. The Smog Check thingy was just a hiccup that could have been prevented if I knew what I needed to know when I needed to know it.

Seems like people have gotten less responsible, making their own rules, and don't seem to care as much anymore. This is local to out here. I can't speak for your city or state since I haven't been there.
