I just got hit with a huge bill

Don't know what course you're doing, but mine really didn't need many, if any, of the books on it. I'm doing English, and found that since most of the texts were public domain, I could download them and print them in the library, rather than buying them. Also, there are always guys a year ahead of you who are dying to unload their useless books, if you ask around town you'll be able to get them well cheaper than online.

My college finally sent out the notice that books can now be reserved, so I hopped onto the bookstore's website, entered in all the course numbers, and found out it was going to cost me $340.50. I went to Amazon and found most of my books for less, so now it looks like the total bill is going to $275.96. Not bad, but still a huge bill for only getting 18 weeks out of the book before it becomes irrelevant.

Haha, I love how you're calling $340.50 a "huge bill." In college terms that's still not a lot of money. I did 8 years of college and have to pay back $160,000 in educational loans. That's a "huge bill." I have a great career and don't regret it but that's the cost of education is insane.

I got through with a combination of the library and borrowing books from fellow course members.

If the course books are consistent year-on-year, could you buy then second-hand ?

I feel for you.

Here in the UK, fees are very modest - when I was in university there were no fees and we even got subsistence grants.

When I had to buy them, the in store book shop prided itself on selling the core textbooks for any course at cheaper prices than anywhere else, although if you had to order in a book that wasnt on the reading list they would charge extra. I guess that's just one exception to the rule. Of course they were selling new textbooks at under the original price that it was on amazon. But when you finally realise that you really dont need "new" textbooks and that used ones are just as good for the job they do then amazon becomes a useful tool because of their great marketplace.

Saved me a ton using Chegg for my kid's books.
