humor me here....

so yet another long drawn out conversation at work..... lets get your opinion on this guys.

so we were talkin about the economy and what we all thought could or should be done to fix it or change the way its going these days.....

i come up with this idea....... just for conversations sake....

what if we dissolve the federal gov't and each state stand up as its own individual country? each state still has its own laws, but goodbye enormous national debt and obscene taxes as well as paying rediculous wages for certain higher govt officials who strangely have neglected to pay their taxes as well....

obvious downfalls that i see.....
horribly imminent and probably immediate civil wars between states, or then at the time countrys.
lack of military ****** for certain states, but others having massive ones based on military installation locations.
border security is non existent....
im sure there are many other downfalls that i could come up with, along with many other plus sides, but i really dont want to drag this initial post on too long.....

so, what are your thoughts?
what do you guys think the goods and bads would be with this idea?

remember this is purely for conversations sake............

There are no "goods" with that idea. If we purposely split our nation into 50 different countries, it would be the worst thing we could possibly do. There are a million different reasons as to why that would be true, but here are just a few...

- State (well, in this case, "national") funding would suffer
- Food supplies would suffer and each individual "nation" would have to barter and trade with one another
- Travel would become a MAJOR disaster
- Wars would ensue, as each "nation" would want control of even more territory, because the size of each state wouldn't be enough
- Politics would be so complicated that nobody would know how to handle any issues

...plus a **** load more

so your saying, If American lost the Revolutionary War. We'll now, in from that aspec.
I wish it was like that.
Simply because the road we have paved is a disaster.
Not only have there been a other side to the whole template.
It just was suppose to be firmilar but had been over turned by scandelous developers.
Its like...not the same. but thats the coolest thing it could be. If it was the same.
that couldn't be cool at all. Because, the world would be as it is today.
I guess we would have more freedom. Life could be more stick
Overall things would get done.
I don't know how else to think about it.

i agree with u, chi, on the wars thing, which i listed in my origional post.
as far as the political thing........ well thats the whole point isnt it? hitting the reset button on the political system and doing away entirely with the federal government. for the funding, well im sure we can both agree that the majority of things the government funds, primarily money that goes outside the country to solve other peoples problems while we have too many of our own at the moment, but not leaving out a rediculous number of the funding plans we have here, are complete lunacy and the only reason why they exist is for the very fact that they couldnt possibly ever make any sence to any reasonable human whatsoever. so those would go away and the focus would definately be put back inside the country where it belongs. that is a huge plus. travel from one place to another could be an issue but honestly i dont see it as being one because we have no border security whatsoever between each state as of now and the thought that one would magically arise overnight is kinda......... unrealistic. so in my opinion thats a non issue type issue.... cmon guys lets keep this ball rollin......

I'm a libertarian and I believe in limited government. You could have a weaker federal government, or as you say dissolve the federal government and form a confederation. The confederation would still have the same national military a national government structure, including currency, but the states would have more rights within themselves. I believe the European Union is considered a confederation as well as the former Soviet Union. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the original thirteen colonies were considered a confederation until the constitutional convention formed the federal republic we now have. I'm not sure that debt could be wiped out with out a lot o major problems, as well as a loss in confidence in the world marketplace.

that film is neither true nor did it change my outlook on life in the slightest. sorry.

tommyC, yes the Us was originally a confederation and the original governing document was called the "articles of confederation". It's generally considered by historians to have been a complete failure that nearly destroyed the nation and that's why it was dissolved and the new Constitution was put worth.

But I like your idea OP. everyone in Georgia is really stoked on it, they even have an idea for the flag already made up.

An old lady was asked by young chap, is young or old is good for sex.
She said *** both are equal.

The younger has the speed and older has stroke.

Also while the country thought like that a long time ago, even if in principle we were all to stick together, there were too many times where it just caused another rift where we were at each other's throats. Besides the things Chef has mentioned there would be another less check against the power of the states against their own people. Most state constitutions are a lot easier to change than the national one. It would kind of suck to have the state you live in decide to get rid of unlawful search and seizure one day, for example, and the people having little recourse other than ******** to solve their dilemma. Things that effected more than one state no matter what they did to avoid it would also cause a problem. What happens if pollution from one state enters another or if one cuts off a river's supply of water? The majority of states would be virtually landlocked in that situation to. Who would control the airwaves that can stretch across borders? How would criminals be extradited, and could one state just plain refuse to do so if it wanted to? Making agreements on how to channel electricity or natural gas from one area to another would probably be a nightmare also. Their would have to be agreements between many different parties and everybody would have to pray nothing bad went down because of some disagreement.
