How long would it usually take for a moderator to approve a thread?

A couple of year ago, it would happen very quickly. Currently, there are fewer mods, and they have extremely limited authority to do anything, so it is hard to motivate them to log in and get the job done. How long it takes now is anyone's guess.
Your posts had to be moderated until you had 5 total posts. You now have that. You won't have to wait anymore. That is, once your account has been fully activated (which is now possible, as you have 5 posts) by a team member, you'll be good to go, and your posts/threads will appear instantly. Give it a day or two, and you'll have no more waiting.

ok, I new here (20 minutes ago) so bear with as I am elderly too. I see I need to make 5 posts so this is # 1. How do I start my own thread?...it's not obvious to me.

On the title page of each section you'll see an Orange button marked "Post New Thread". Hit that, enter the title you want in the title bar, then post your post. :hatsoff: Welcome to the board.

It should be in the upper left quadrant of your screen, as you're looking at the thread titles. On this page, there is an orange button marked "Reply To Thread". It's in the same relative place as the New Thread button is on the title page. If you're not seeing it, I dunno what to tell you. When I was a newbie, Romans rode dinosaurs and I forget what was what back then.

Hey, I'm giving the guy two thumbs up for not making his first post, "Help me I.D. this chick." If he had, I'd have made him cry. Since he didn't, he's alright by me. And as the tie that binds this board together, the Elmer's Glue, the double reinforced stitching on the blue jeans that is FreeOnes; I feel the need to set a standard that the rest of you cretins can't possibly live up to.
