Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
I was absolutely OUTRAGED when I read this article.

WARNING: The slide show is not for the faint of heart.

Legal action earlier this year resulted in a judge's decision that effectively outlawed the slaughter of horses for human consumption, an activity that was being conducted at 3 equine slaughterhouses in the United States. The backlash from those individuals who profit by such activities was to export unwanted and surplus animals to Mexico for slaughter in the most barbaric manner possible.

This is not what the judge's decision intended.

On September 7, H.R. 503 was passed by the U.S. House of Representatives as a separate piece of legislation prohibiting the export of horses from the United States for such purposes. This bill will also provide funding for existing resources within the humane and rescue sectors to give these animals a second chance at life. This bill is currently stuck in committee in the U.S. Senate as Senate bill S. 311.

I urge all of you who are American citizens who care about this issue to write your Senators and urge them to get this bill out of committee and to vote for it at the earliest possible opportunity. If you don't know how to contact your senator, use this resource to send him/her an email.

When new laws are made you can always count on unintended results happening.

Could somebody please tell me what wrong with eating horse meat in the first place? A law virtually outlawing it consumption makes absolutely no sense. It's healthier than eating beef even. People, even in this country, have even eaten it for a long time now. Is there something I'm not getting here besides there are really stupid people out there that go too far with animal rights?

I think to some extent horses are an integral part of American History, if you look back horses are probably the most respected animal in the US. Horses are often treated better than dogs (man's best friend). I've eaten horse while visiting relatives in France, it tastes pretty good but in America people hold horses in too high regard to use them as food.

So are cows, pigs, chickens, etc...but we eat them every fucking day.

People are just always out looking for something to be mad about, and this is a good example. There is nothing wrong with eating horse meat. It is no different than eating ostrich meat or snake meat. Are they "normal" animals to eat in the social sense? Hell no, not in America. But, do they taste good? FUCK...YES.

I've eaten some pretty "weird" shit in my day and I'll be damned if the "law" is going to prohibit what food I can/can't put into my stomach.

Yeah, but part of what I meant was that people often attribute personalities to horses, much like they do with dogs and cats. And how many Americans eat there cat or dog?

i've eaten horse before, 3 years ago, and one day i'll eat it again. it was good.

it's absurd that a law can be made to prohibit the slaughter of one animal but continue to let the other "normal food animals" continue to be tortured while in captivity and "brutally" slaughtered.
the slaughter of any animal is brutal. their throats get slit, their head get smashed.
they're being killed for consumption, it's not going to be pretty.
debeaking chickens ond overcrowding their cages, beautiful, huh?
throwing boiling water on live pigs to rid them of their hair, that's nice.

by the way, now a ton of horses are going to starve.
justice??

This is the thing, most people have a different association with horses than they do cows, pigs, and chickens. It would be like eating cat or dog. People don't eat their pets and a lot of people view horses as a pet or a member of their family.

So is there anything wrong with eating horse? Not really, as long as the horse was RAISED for slaughter. What a lot of people don't realize is the horses the 3 remaining slaughter houses use have been sold to them by horse buyers that haunt the auctions and buy up the horse that a kid outgrew and thinks is going to a new home. Or old bessy that the family thinks is going to a good family with little kids for her retirement days. Retired or hurt race horses that can't be used for breeding also get bought up at auction and sold to slaughter houses.

Here about 15 years ago when horse meat was over .75 a pound, there were horse thiefs stealing people's horses out of the barns and pastures and selling them (and the slaughter houses wern't asking questions). My horse almost got stolen.

So yea, I guess I wouldn't have a problem with horse meat if I could be 100% sure I wasn't eating someone's stolen horse or the family horse that the seller thought was going to a good home.
