Hooters Waitress Told To Lose Weight

DETROIT - Hooters had just given waitress Cassie Smith a glowing 2 year review.

But her bosses and two women on a conference call from the company's headquarters in Atlanta changed their tune when it came to her uniform evaluation

“They were like, your shorts and your shirt size could use some improvement,” said Smith.

Cassie, who is 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighs 132 pounds claims she sat there while she was told if she wanted to keep her job she needed to drop some weight.

“These women proceeded to tell me I had 30 days, they would give me a free gym membership, and if I didn't improve in 30 days I would be separated from the company,” Smith said.

“I was horrified, I was heartbroken, I was humiliated,” she continued.

Cassie clearly doesn't have a problem squeezing into her skimpy uniform, an extra small tank top and shorts.

In fact she says when she started this job 2 years ago she weighed about 10 pounds more than she does now.

Questions to the restaurant’s general manager Rob Rice were deferred to Hooters’ corporate offices.

For Cassie the damage has already been done.

The 20 year-old feels like she's a victim of weight discrimination by a corporation with unrealistic expectations.

“I don't want other girls to go through this. I don't want anyone to have to go through this.”

A Hooters girl with measurements many women would envy has been deemed “too big” for her skimpy shorts at a Michigan restaurant. Management has asked the girl to shape up or they may ship her off.

Cassandra Smith’s facebook page has been flooded with messages of support. This 20 year old's world was turned upside down when her managers called her in for a two year review Friday, joined by two women on a conference call from Hooters corporate office in Atlanta.


"The one woman went over my entire evaluation with me. Strong points, weak points. Some things we can work on. Some things I excel in. You know, the normal," Cassandra explained. The evaluation continued as normal until it came to the topic of her uniform when management said her shorts and shirt sizes were “not properly fitting anymore.”



Cassie is almost 5’8’’ and weighs 132 pounds. She was brought to tears when she was given her options to improve. "She proceeded to tell me she'd give me a free gym membership, and that I would have 30 days. If I improved a little bit, I'd be given 30 more days. If I improved completely they would leave me alone. And if I didn't improve at all I would possibly be separated from the company," Cassie recalled.

5 ' 8" - 132 is not fat, so i think they may be bullshitting a little in the story.

I think when your job involves your appearance an employer should have the right to demand you look a certain way. I don't see it as any different than a coach getting on a player that comes in overweight after the off-season or somebody that hires a model for a promotion when the same happens.

Now whether people's opinions are about whether she looks good enough for the job are another matter.

I have read this too(although I disagree that they are "legally discriminating"). Women working there are told this when they hire on....but I have found nothing in my search to back it up. These women are the corporations image it sure as hell ain't the food, and Hooters has the right to control it's public image IMO. I believe this has to do with how she looks...not how much she weighs. :2 cents:

I agree - Hooters is mostly known for its hot women and the girls hired are expected to keep up on their appearance. But in this case, Hooters has no right to even mention this girls weight. If she had gained like 50lbs, and was actually chubby or overweight, then sure. But this girl is a normal, healthy body weight and for them to throw ultimatums at her, is wrong. If she dropped only 5lbs, she'd be considered underweight for her height and age...thats got to tell you that Hooters is in the wrong here. This girl can't lose any weight without being considered underweight or unhealthy...so from a physical and medical standpoint, Hooters has no case against this girl.

To be honest I didn't notice the managers the last time I went to Hooters....I was too busy looking at the......Ummm....enjoying my food!!
