In the photo below, Confederate prisoner Lieutenant James B. Washington sits alongside his friend, Second Lieutenant George A. Custer.
They were classmates at West Point before the Civil War broke out. This photo was taken in 1862.
George Armstrong Custer was promoted to brigadier general on June 29,1863.
The American Civil War lasted 4 years and 31 days, from April 12, 1861 to May 9, 1865.
