Has America Won The War On Terror?

No, because it can't be won. It's ongoing because there will always be terrorist or terrorist-like groups/movements. Doesn't mean the "war on terror" is necessarily wrong, it is necessary to combat those groups, just that it isn't something you can win.

(this isn't an endorsement of everything that's gone on under the "war on terror," things about it can be done better but the idea behind it is justified.)

Spleen

Banned?
I don't think the war or terror actually exists. It's just made up to make Americans feel more comfortable. Terrorism and extreme acts of violence have been with mankind for a long, long time. Everyone wants to prevent this, and of course measures must be taken, but to call it a "war"? There is no beginning to it and no end, so how can anyone ever WIN that?

Of course not. Threats still exist. The west has of course gotten better at recognising potential threats and neutralising them over the past 10 years. but the 'War on Terror' which is a ridiculous title as many have already stated, is not about force, it's about ideology and so long as there are those groups out there who find it prudent to promote an anti-west/anti-US stance in order to further their own political ends (like al-Qaeda and al-Shabaab) then there will always be impressionable individuals who will be willing to take up arms and fight the 'oppressors'. It's how the US and it's allies deal with this spread of ideological thinking that will ultimately help curb some of the potential threats it faces (of course not all) and this cannot be done with brute force alone.

Militarily, I guess you can make an argument it has been effective. But fighting an enemy without borders is VERY difficult and relies more on good intel and "special" ops more than military might.

On the domestic side, our government now spies on it's own citizens and uses the threat as a means to subjugate it's citizens so on that front, I think the bad guys have "won" and we as Americans have given up more of our freedom... :2 cents:

Not just americans. All governments use times such as these to force through legislation that curtails the liberty of its citizens.

It's not a war you can "win," unless you gather all the Islamofascists on the planet and nuke them off the face of the earth. It will forever be a case of good defense, IMO.

The the whole war is ridiculous! No one get rid of terror it would be like saying we should get rid of theft, yes theft could be reduced but it will never stop - it never has through out history. America is wasting it's money on this war it should focus on its economy and try to get itself out of that shit :/

Focus on the thousands (or millions) of Islamofascists first, then you can focus on the half dozen or so Christian wingnuts. ;)

True but lets fix the original source of the problem: religion :p, also most of the fundamentalists we are fighting have been funded by our religious whack jobs (republicans) e.g. taliban. so thats the reason why I say ALL RELIGIOUS WHACKJOBS

As many in this thread have already stated, this is not a winnable war because you can't defeat an ideaology. The US is fighting a war on a word, and that just isn't winnable.

What's new? You lot funded the IRA.
But they're not terrorists but freedom fighters taking up arms against the big bad British aggressor

And you win for posting the biggest pile of cliche shit this week. Well done.

They cause more problems that they cure. You can't waltz into any country that isn't yours and set up camp and do as you please. And if anyone tries to stop you then they will be labeled as terrorists. Cliche or not what that guy said, it's all true. It's funny how the invaders are usually the ones to shout "TERRORIST!" first when they don't get it their own way. That's the pesky invaders for you though.

No one will ever win a war on terror.

The word "terrorist" is thrown around far too much.

There will never be a Utopian world.
Oceania is a pipe dream from 1984.

Dystopia, the idea of a society in a repressive and controlled state, often under the guise of being utopian.

The illusion of freedom.

Terror is an abstract, and can't be fought with guns and bombs. However, if you were to ask if the war with Al Qaeda is won, I'd have to say no. We are winning that particular conflict, though.

Too all the assheads who are taking this simple thread as an opportunity to bash America:

While I don't like the doctrine that makes us the world's police and I sure as hell hate the criticism we face, I did serve proudly with the Marine Corps and was involved in some shitty situations because of some assholes in Washington.

More often than not, we do good work around the world, bringing the American way of life to infidels, heathens, the oppressed and innocent bystanders whether they like it or not, all while having our Constitutional rights shelved in order to do so.

Without our help Europe would have either been part of the Soviet Union or Nazi Germany and I think may people conveniently forget that.

As far as the war on terrorism is concerned, no. We haven't won and probably never will. I still have to remove my shoes whenever I have to fly anywhere.
