Harris County Deputy Gunned Down in Cold Blood

Still no condolences from the White House.

Hypocrite.

he's in alaska renaming mountains.

He should indeed stay out of such matters although I will say that nobody in the climbing community calls it Mt. McKinley and it is universally referred to simply as "Denali". Local Alaskans would overwhelmingly support such a move.

That said....how important of an issue is it to have presidential involvement? It isn't. At all. All these problems and this is his immediate priority? My God....

I have to admit, "Denali" sounds alot cooler and bad-ass than "Mt. McKinley." Apparently it was named by some prospector who was a fan.

Denali it is.

Hypocrite.

Me or Stompy Foot? Because if you're saying that about Dear Leader I wholeheartedly agree. He sent representatives to Tray Tray's funeral, the gentle giant's funeral and Eric Garner's funeral and he sang terribly at the memorial in Charleston. Seven cops killed in one weekend and what's he do? He goes to Alaska to take some of the whiteness out of history. He is easily the most divisive president in the last fifty years. From his beer summit after he called police stupid, to his "If I had a son" remarks, to his zeal to have his DOJ find a smidgen of racism amongst law enforcement in any case involving black criminals killed by cops.

But yeah, I'm the hypocrite.

And if you're referring to me, I'd point out that if a shitty cop does something shitty, I'm the first one to jump on his case. Because shitty cops make life harder for those of us who go about trying to actually serve our communities.

I had to work with a douche knuckle who had been fired from FOUR different police agencies for varying reasons. From use of force beefs to moral turpitude. The guy was a train wreck of a human being. The straw that broke the camel's back with me was when he broke a fifteen-year-old kid's arm while answering a really minor call about kids drinking beer in a park. While restraining one of the kids he may or may not have employed a controlled force move that is specifically prohibited. The kid suffered a spiral break, which is almost as serious as a compound break.

Anyway, the douche in question bears more than a passing resemblance to me (shaved skull, heavy muscular build. A little shorter than me, though.) and I immediately requested a transfer because patrolling in that area could have put me in danger of having to deal with a vengeful parent. I know if it was my kid, I'd probably be out for blood.

But bad cops put good peoples' lives in danger and therefore good cops are almost invariably the first people to try and weed them out.

My ex brother-in-law is a bad cop in Eastern New Mexico. No one wants to work with him or answer officer assistance calls from him because he's a badge heavy asshole. I keep wondering why assholes like him are allowed to keep their commissions but it's above my pay grade, I guess.

Sorry if you misconstrued my comment. I though the reference was obvious. If the president wants to make commentary in an attempt to provide some badly-needed leadership on this ever-worsening issue, he needs to be consistent in his message and his timing. Choosing not to comment when the injustice is inverted from the "cop shoots unarmed black person" viewpoint makes a mockery of his position and undermines his credibility and only serves to make a bad situation even worse. Very disappointing. Consider the following comments from Milwaukee County sheriff Ron Clarke (who just happens to be a black man):

Sheriff David Clarke is not one to mince words, and now he’s blaming a lack of presidential leadership for creating an atmosphere where protesters can openly call for the murder of police officers without comment from the White House.

On Judge Jeanine Pirro’s show on Fox News, the sheriff directly charged the president for an “open season” on police officers. Clarke’s comments follow upon the “execution-style” murder of Deputy Dan Goforth at a Chevron gas station in Texas.

Sheriff Clarke made it clear he was “too pissed off” to sugarcoat what he thought of the situation, saying he was not going to “be diplomatic about what’s going on” and he’s “not going to stick his head in the sand about it.”

Clarke charged the White House for creating an environment for over-the-top rhetoric and violence against police officers:

“I said last December that war had been declared against the American police officer, led by some high-profile people. One of them coming out of the White House, another one coming out of the U.S. Department of Justice. And it’s open season right now, no doubt about it.”

Later in the interview, the sheriff pointed his finger at the president himself:

Clark commented after a question on the lack of leadership facing the issue of attacks on police:

“That’s why I said the President of the United States started this ‘war on police.'”

Others have raised questions about the president seizing on opportunities to politicize acts of violence against black Americans, while remaining silent on high-profile cases when police officers or non-minority individuals are murdered.

The shooting at WDBJ in Roanoke, Virginia by a disgruntled former employee that had made accusations of racial discrimination against his colleagues has led to widespread national discussion of whether or not the murderer Vester Flanagan (also known on-air as Bryce Williams) should be charged with a hate crime.

“You want a race war? … BRING IT THEN YOU WHITE…(deleted)!!!” Flanagan wrote in response to the Charleston shooting carried out by white supremacist Dylann Roof, as was reported by ABC News.

Roof was investigated at a federal level for “hate crime” charges in the racially motivated shooting, yet any such case against Flanagan has gone unpursued.

If the president truly wants to halt the ever-increasing racial divide that is being exacerbated in the USA to a level that reminds me of the 1960s, he needs to change his rhetoric to include all people regardless of qualifiers whenever senseless and tragic incidents like this take place. He has truly failed miserably in this aspect of his presidency when, as the first black president, he has an unprecedented opportunity to provide a message of confluence to help bridge the racial divide. Instead, his results have led to even more polarization. Very disappointing to say the least.

They bury Deputy Goforth this Friday. Local community support for the police and his family in particular has been overwhelming and heartfelt. How nice it would be if the president were to contribute to that support! As I quoted in an earlier post, Harris County sheriff Ron Hickman got it right when he said this:

"Cops' lives matter, too," Hickman said then. "So why don't we drop the qualifier and say lives matter?"

Wouldn't it be great if those same words came from Obama's lips as well? Instead....silence. It's deafening in its effect.

Still no condolences from the White House.

This afternoon, on my way to Alaska, I called Kathleen Goforth, the widow of Harris County Deputy Sheriff Darren Goforth – a veteran law enforcement officer who was contemptibly shot and killed over the weekend. On behalf of the American people, I offered Mrs. Goforth my condolences, and told her that Michelle and I would keep her and her family in our prayers. I also promised that I would continue to highlight the uncommon bravery that police officers show in our communities every single day. They put their lives on the line for our safety. Targeting police officers is completely unacceptable – an affront to civilized society. As I said in my State of the Union Address, we’ve got to be able to put ourselves in the shoes of the wife who won’t rest until the police officer she married walks through the door at the end of his shift. That comfort has been taken from Mrs. Goforth. So we must offer her our comfort – and continue to stand up for the safety of police officers wherever they serve.

I hadn't seen that he telephoned the Widow Goforth and while that's a step in the right direction, there is more he could do. Like not automatically assume a cop is in the wrong and sending his DOJ to do some witch hunting. If he stopped entertaining douche bags like Reverend Sharpton, that would be nice, too. At least until he pays his $4,500,000 in back taxes.

Thanks for this, Ice. I too am very glad to see this. However, I wish he had been made it more visible from a public standpoint rather than simply issuing a press statement. His public reaction to the Michael Brown, Freddie Gray, etc situations was much more demonstrative so he needs to be consistent in the way he frames his message against violence, particularly gun violence, regardless of the circumstances in my opinion.

While it was a nice gesture, he needs to be as vocal and use the bully pulpit in the same manner and speak to the millions that he has helped to incite with his irresponsible rhetoric of the past couple of years. Which was Ace's point.
