By now most people have seen the horrifying photos of the child of a Syrian refugee who drowned on a voyage to Greece. It's truly awful to see a dead child lying face down on the beach. At the same time, it is important to consider the root causes of this tragedy and other deaths just like this.
The family who fled, led by a Muslim named Abdullah Kurdi, originated in Syria, where there is a lot of killing going around on all sides. It is only understandable they would want to leave to save their own lives. But these children didn't die on a boat ride from Syria to Greece. They originated in Turkey. They were on their way to Greece, and from there they wanted to head to Canada.
The question is why? They were certainly safe in Turkey. There is no war in Turkey. But what Turkey is lacking is a generous welfare state, which Canada has. When Abdullah took his family from Syria to Turkey, he was a refugee. But when he took his family on a rickity boat from Turkey to Greece, he became an illegal alien. He had no life or death need to cross illegally into another country. He was just looking for a country whose taxpayers would support him and his family.
If he hadn't been so set on sneaking into a country with higher welfare benefits, his family would certainly all be alive.
You can see the same situation repeated in Hungary. There are thousands of migrants there who came from the Middle East and are using Hungary as a route to get to Germany. Why don't they want to stay in Hungary? Because Germany gives a lot more welfare benefits. These people start off as refugees but once they cross over into Turkey they become economic migrants.
As the Prime Minister of Hungary said:
“The moral, human thing is to make clear: ‘Please don’t come. Why do you have to go from Turkey to Europe? Turkey is a safe country. Stay there. It’s risky to come,’” Orban said. After the train was stopped outside Budapest, many of the asylum-seekers refused to get off, fearing that they would be marooned in unwelcoming Hungary and eventually deported rather than making it to richer nations.
The "richer" nations, get it? It's all about welfare benefits, and living off the European taxpayer.
And then there is the matter of religion. Most of these refugees are Muslim, and Europe has had tremendous problems with Muslim populations imposing sharia law, hunting down and killing Jews, joining ISIS and Al Qaeda, getting trained abroad, and returning to kill Christians and Jews. It's insanity for Christian nations to import so many Muslims that the very character of their nations change.
If millions of Christian economic migrants swamped Morocco or Tunesia, no one would expect these nations to let such a large population in that would change the very nature of their cultures; so why is Europe (and America), held to a ridiculous standard?
The narrative that these refugees are only safe once they get to Europe is phony; they should stay in Turkey or better yet, other Arab nations, who haven't lifted a finger to help, should absorb them. But blaming the West for the greed of these migrants who are looking to get not merely to safety but to "rich" countries is ridiculous.
