Greatest Fictional Dectective Who Do You Choose?

I wanna say Batman, but Sherlock Holmes could probably smell one of Batman's farts and deduce that he is Bruce Wayne in five minutes...

Except nobody is as crazily prepared as Batman is and he would have probably already captured somebody else's farts and released them for Holmes for just that occasion.

Harry Callahan.

Sledge Hammer

Damn you for being first!
But I wholly agree!

And not to nitpick, but the proper spelling of his name is, "Sledge Hammer!"

Anyone know who that is (without google)?

From Dick Francis's books. ;-)

I just Googled it, some guy with some connection with race horses, apparently.

Who was the detective in several H. P. Lovecraft stories? I honestly don't remember if a detective was involved, or just some guy snooping around who eventually was driven mental.

I tried Googling that also, but no luck on my part.

I must switch my vote. Just finished the latest 'Discworld' novel, and Sam Vimnes is the best detective :)

Brilliant and beautiful, it's a rare pleasure to virtually meet you Petra. I haven't read that story, but I was pretty sure Lovecraft had used a detective before. Thanks for the answer.
