Good call on the Greatful Dead. I don't know if another American band has more of a loyal following. My dad's friend does have a KISS tattoo though.

Also a good question. It's hard to nail down a single band that the "best," because there are many that were/are influential and important.

These kinds of threads always intrigue me. "Greatest" can involve a lot of things. To me, it should involve popularity based on hits, record sales, and so on typed things. Also, there are the less tangible qualities like longevity, social impact, effect individual band members had, etc. So based on those kinds of criteria, I'd vote for The Eagles--thus showing my fairness, because I hate The Eagles. Here are some others to consider:

--Creedence Clearwater Revival

All you whiners about "where is ???" need to understand....there are only 10 choices on the poll option!! C'mon....make your case for your particular choice but please stop complaining that they weren't one of the poll options....you could probably have 20-plus choices and still people would mention other possibilities.

Grateful Dead definitely has a case to be made. Conversely, Fleetwood Mac and AC/DC are not American bands. How about The Ramones???
