Who would argue that it is ultimately not in our (the USA's) best interest to see the other nations with whom, like it or not, we are inextricably stuck on this planet be prosperous and successful?

It is not in the USA's best interest to pour our dollars into other countries while our own country goes down the shitter. I don't think we should be giving out all this aid OR fighting wars over oil. If there was one thing I liked about Pat Buchanan amongst all of his hogwash, is that he was one of the few politicians who could see the benefits to becoming a little more isolationist.

I believe Obama is at least bright enough not to transfer wealth abroad and transfer poverty into America

I can only hope you're right. Though I steadfastly oppose this particular bill, Obama will be getting my vote, because I sincerely hope he will bring some relief in various forms to the lower and middle class. To hell with McCain, he will likely pad the pockets of the rich with money they will never even appreciate or realize they have.

So it's the lesser of the two evils once again. Vote for the guy who wants help the entire world, and maybe the USA if he has any money left. Or the guy who wants to help his fat cat friends. Yeah, that's why I supported Hillary.

While we can debate economic inequities in the US which for sure there are, the level of poverty we are talking about that this bill which is really an offshot of a UN program is unknown in the US and the rest of the developed nations.We are talking about 1.1 billion people who live on a dollar a day or less which this is trying to help.And just so you know 2.7 billion which is about 40% of the people on the planet live on 2 dollars or less.Just about everyone in one of the developed countries is rich compared to that.Not only is it the moral thing to do to try to alleviate that kind of poverty, it is the smart thing to do as well as Jagger has tried to point out.It is countries like the US which is 4% of the worlds population consuming 25% of the worlds energy and disproporiate amounts of other resources that needs stability in the world to continue to maintain our lifestyles.Billions of desperately poor people is a huge threat to that stability.I won't even get into how we live so well at others expense and exploitation cause then I would hear how I am bashing america and besides that is not going to be changing anytime soon if ever.But for us to not try to make some efforts like this bill would is really selfish and short sighted IMO and would cost us in the long run or maybe even short run.

I agree with this along with your other posts in this thread. Yes we could be doing more for our own people, but there is nothing wrong with helping those around us nor should we quit giving help to those in need wherever they may be.

The problem with giving resources to other people that need it (other than the fact it won't be going to our people that need it) is the fact it doesn't really solve then problem. It only works when there is self-sustaining level they can reach because of it where they don't need any outside assistance anymore. I don't see anything that really works to that end. I find this especially bad in areas where they seem to not have enough common sense to keep their birthrates down when it's blatantly obvious they live in a region that can't support the population. Also it might seem harsh but I see myself as having an obligation and duty to my fellow countrymen that I don't have for the rest of the world. (Or more correctly don't have at the same level. As a human being I believe I have certain duties to everybody, but even more to people here.) All things being equal they come first for me. If the situation was reversed and it was some other country not wanting to give us aid because they had other important things they had to take care of I wouldn't hold it against them or hold them to any higher status than us.

I could also note that even if we are linked to the rest of the world, perhaps it's time we start getting more unlinked. Not only to eliminate inheriting the worlds problems as our own, but also so we aren't the cause of many of them. Much of troubles we face now are because of that. Ideally in a scenario with infinite money and resources I wouldn't mind helping everybody as much as they needed but that isn't the case.

Then there is the fact that even when we do help people out were often hated despite of it or seen as melding. I will admit that our government probably has an ulterior motive a lot of the time, and in some respect I can't blame others for feeling that way, but it seems were damned either way. People complain when we act and they complain when we don't do anything even when the other parties that complain don't do anything themselves.
