Glenn Beck Calls Bruce Springsteen's "Born In The USA" "anti-American"

Glenn Beck is an asshole, that song is about the Vietnam war. Originally coming from NJ, I take exception to his right-wing bullshit

:thefinger

Maybe he should stick to being a Muse fan, music doesn't seem to be Mr Beck's strong suit.

Now am I criticising Beck or Muse here? Or is it both? You decide. :D

This song was used as Ronald Reagan's campaign anthem in 1984. I suppose Glenn Beck is actually tearing down the Reagan-as-conservative-god myth that the GOP has been using since 1988. :dunno:

Glenn Beck is truly the incarnation of that evil media figure in the "V for Vendetta" film from a couple of years ago.

Actually RR, Deaver and company wanted to use it, but Bruce wouldn't let them.

RR refered to it in a speach then was rebuffed a few days later by Bruce.

that was the irony of the Republicans wanting to use the in campaign rallies. That irony just showed how the flock mentality applies to everyone. It was not a right or left issue to me at that point, it showed me, back in 1984, that the average American wanted to be showed how to follow

Funny how the tolerate left can't tolerate an opposing view or opinion.

:yesyes:

Springsteen is anti-American.

He was Born in the USSR. :sing:

He sleeps with other guy's wives. :nono:

Actually, he was born in Long Branch, New Jersey.

Oh, wait! You don't believe where people were born. You still believe the current president wasn't born here.
Please don't respond. And I'll just report this post myself. Do you have a favourite mod to whom you like to report?

I'm confused. It's NEVER been pro-American. It's not supposed to be played on the 4th. But it's not anti-American either...it's just a commentary on a soldier returning to America from Vietnam. Either way, being from NJ, I'm highly offended that someone would criticize The Boss. ;)

I play it on the 4th every year......it's a good reality-check.

...not to mention the fact that it's a great song, but what else can I expect from Bruce?

One could eeeeasily make the argument that the song is pro-American. If you think that it's worth remembering that not every American is a happy, healthy, well-adjusted, middle-class person with a satisfying job, surrounded by friends and family of similar status - and that, at least to some degree, this is because of some awful decisions made by those at the top (of the corporate ladder and the government). It seems that Bruce cares about the reasons that are given for why US troops are sent into battle, and how they are treated (by everyone) upon their return from battle, in addition to the well-being of Joe Lunchpail, who makes his living (or not) in a factory setting. Etc.

And yes, even if Bruce has raked in a pretty penny writing and singing songs about those people (would it be better if his record company just kept ALL the money??), that doesn't mean that he's insincere, nor his critiques automatically illegitimate.

Isn't it pro-American to care about one's fellow Americans? Even the ones who have slipped between the cracks?

Play the song on the 4th - LOUD!!!

Born down in a dead man’s town
The first kick I took was when I hit the ground
You end up like a dog that’s been beat too much
Till you spend half your life just covering up

Born in the U.S.A., I was born in the U.S.A.
I was born in the U.S.A., born in the U.S.A.

Got in a little hometown jam
So they put a rifle in my hand
Sent me off to a foreign land
To go and kill the yellow man

Born in the U.S.A....

Come back home to the refinery
Hiring man said “Son if it was up to me”
Went down to see my V.A. man
He said “Son, don’t you understand”

I had a brother at Khe Sahn
Fighting off the Viet Cong
They’re still there, he’s all gone

He had a woman he loved in Saigon
I got a picture of him in her arms now

Down in the shadow of the penitentiary
Out by the gas fires of the refinery
I’m ten years burning down the road
Nowhere to run ain’t got nowhere to go

Born in the U.S.A., I was born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A., I’m a long gone Daddy in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A., Born in the U.S.A.
Born in the U.S.A., I’m a cool rocking Daddy in the U.S.A.

I'm playin' it loud and proud!!!

Interviewer: Bruce, Glenn Beck says that your classic anthem from the '80s, Born in the USA, is anti-American. What do you have to say about that?

Bruce: Who the fuck is Glenn Beck?

Anybody who thinks Bruce Springsteen doesn't love America is a fucking idiot. Period.

I'd rep you if they'd let me, Elwood!

One of the most patriotic songs ever written. Beck's ignorance is beyond incredible.

Springsteen is about 1 billion times more important that Glenn Beck.

And about 1 billion squared times more talented.

do i hear "1 google"? anyone for "1 google"? 1 billion going once. 1 billion going twice. Done. Bruce Springsteen is both 1 billion times more talented AND more important than Glen Beck.

Next on the docket, "How much more talented and important is Bob Seger than Glen Beck". We'll start the bidding at 1 thousand times more. Do i hear 2 thousand?

After reading the lyrics that Elwood so kindly posted, I'm reminded that I think some conservatives really get off on these stories of suffering lower-class people, because hey, 1 out of a million of them ends up becoming a self-made millionaire or something like that, and being "happy". The conservatives who realize that it's weird to use songs like this as conservative political anthems don't see it as irony. They actually want MORE guys who are like "dogs that've been beat too much", who see their own lives as having "nowhere to go". They're easy to manipulate - they can fill church pews pretty nicely - in most cases and they make for such great stories!!!

Being a Brit I'm not familiar with Mr Beck but glad to see he's on the cutting edge of popular culture. He also sticks it to that trendy pop star Woody Guthrie! Way to go Beck but I think the youth of today will be very angry with you for dissing their musical heroes! :dunno:

Ha ha ha damn that record hit the stores in friggin' 1984

Can't wait for 2036... when he learns about Lady Gaga:rofl:
