Taking screenshots ... and open source software ...
is there a way that i can do this without using microsoft word? my free trial expired.
You do
not need MS Office to take screenshots.
Hit "Print Screen" which sends the current screen to the copy buffer.
Then open up any bitmap graphics editing program (built-in MS Paint, Adobe Photoshop, free

, etc...) and "Paste".
BTW, if you want a MS Office replacement (superior in some ways, especially at reading older MS Office versions than MS Office itself, although it's not going to be as compatible at the latest MS Office with newer formats), there is always

If you don't mind paying $70,

includes Fonts and extra converters Sun couldn't GPL (OpenOffice.org development originated with the StarOffice 5.2 codebase -- StarOffice actually predates MS Office, long story).
If you just want a lighter MS Word replacement, there is

Note that OpenOffice.org/StarOffice, like MS Office, does not include a bitmap graphics editing program (e.g., Adobe Photoshop), only a vector graphics editing program (e.g., Adobe Illustrator). That's where programs like

come in. There are various replacements for The Gimp for cinematic and other editing as well, just like there are various replacements for word processors such as true desktop publishing (DTP) applications -- e.g., Adobe FrameMaker (which Microsoft itself uses to write their own MS Office manuals, as MS Word can't cut it) or Adobe InDesign, free
