I own a few toys and my feeling is that toys are less controllable and often encourage a quick finish and lots of lubricant. Take a fleshlight for example, I wouldn't say it feels better to masturbate with that over using your hand(s) but it does bring you to orgasm faster.
If I was to put them on some kind of intensity scale it'd be something like this. 1 being the tiniest stimulation and 10 being the maximum
With your hands you can be softer and stimulate yourself on a wider scale IMO, in this case it would be from around a 2, up to a maximum of 8. (don't take these numbers too literally its just an example)
