The best-made Spielberg film is Jaws - clean, tight narrative involving a tight group of three men and an incredible plot-driving machine in the form of a shark hunt. Jaws is edited better than most b-movies. In my opinion, the only better edited film which Spielberg has made has been Close Encounters. Raiders of the Lost Ark is well-made, but I think that the action set piece sometimes over-forced narrative cuts.

If I was stuck on an island, I'd want Close Encounters. Epic story, told efficiently - not even Lean could've outmatched Spielberg here.

hell yeah.. the color purple is ma favorite. when you see that movie and how it deals with african-americans in early american. you wouldn't even think that a white man like steven spielberg had something to do with that movie. his best work ever. I'm not gonna say Saving Private Ryan cause it was expected of him. spielbergs first film when he was 13, was a war movie.. go firgure. so to me private ryan wasn't much of a task for him. but still a great film.
