Does The Term Hater Really Mean Someone Who Hates?

Lately I've seen enough T-Shirts and Bumper Stickers that say things like Haters Gonna Hate and it seemed strange in the context they were projecting. Looked like they were baiting people to be jealous wanting them to believe they had something they wanted others to covet. At best, I would think the person could only welcome some bitterness or resentfulness but hatred is a stretch that requires a lot of effort and commitment. Mr Mustang 5.0 is probably not worth the attention.

When Osama Bin Laden was killed I felt I had a void of hatred inside of me that needed to be replenished. Some douchebag calling that kind of attention to himself that crawls out of that same cracker box apartment on a daily basis is just not as satisfying. I'd love to hate him but he's not good enough.

Yeah I'd say it's more about envy and bitterness than actual hate. But yes, the term haters does generally refer to people "hating on" stuff, or overall negativity toward something. Bashing a new hair style, criticizing a celebrity, putting down strippers and porn stars, etc. Best not to read too much into it.
