Documentaries

National Geographic, Discovery Channel, History Channel, A&E, and Discovery Science Channel all have great documentries. I watched a couple last week on Abe Lincoln and George Washington. I don't remember for sure, but I think they were on National Geographic. Very good if you like Presidential stuff.

Sharkwater

Probably the most important documentary I've seen in the last few years. A guy sets out on a journey just to find out more about sharks, but it turns into something much more when you realise just how important sharks are to our planet, and how no one seems to notice.

Of course it's not all that simple. Throw in some pirate attacks and a flesh eating disease and you got a winner.

That sounds good. Where did you see it?

The Boy Whose Skin Fell Off
Hoop Dreams
When We Were Kings
'The Universe' series is very good
Don't Look Back
Capturing the Friedmans
Touching The Void

"Dogtown & Z-Boys" - Stacy Peralta's doc on the influential skateboard pack he rode with

Also, another really good skateboarding documentary is "Stoked:The Rise And Fall Of Gator".

If you don't know,Mark "Gator" Ragowski was at one time back in the 80's,just as popular and famous(relatively speaking) as Tony Hawk, and I would go out on a limb and say that his boards sold as many,if not more than Hawk's did.

This is a truly tragic tale of how some people just really don't know how to handle their own fame.Whether you are into skating or not,it's an excellent watch.

I wasn't as big of a fan of this. I'm not really sure why. I guess it was just OK in my opinion. Kind of felt like a story with no real moral at the end....other than don't kill someone. Plus the phone interview just seemed annoying to me, but I suppose that could have been seen as artistic or really, the only way they could've gotten an interview.

I don't really think that the filmmakers were out to deliver a moral to his story.I felt like it was what it was.A guy that was a talented skater who's life went to shit because he couldn't control himself.

I like the fact that it wasn't stylized like a lot of other docs.It was straight forward and unapologetic.

The Bridge,The King Of Kong, and Man On Wire are a few of my favorites, but they have a very stylized presentation to them that Stoked just chose not to do,which I appreciate it for that.

The best documentaries I can think of immediately are the one about the Munich Olympics terrorism, narrated by Michael Douglas; and the one about the Weather Underground.

Ken Burns is supposed to be the documentary stud, and he's done stuff on baseball and jazz but they're insanely long.

Any Ken Burns series are really meant to be watched once a week. You can go into info overload if you watch too many in a row.

Has anyone seen his WWII doc? I'd love to get a hold of it.
