I was 11. I did not understand why it felt good, it freaked me out. I didn't have an orgasm the first time. I felt weird about it and told myself I wouldn't do it again, then when night fell and I was alone in bed I did it anyway. Once I figured out how to do it to completion, the guilt rapidly went away.
I was ten and had this electric toothbrush. I remember watching something on Cinemax at night in 1984. I got a boner and felt really good. I decided to massage it with the electric toothbrush. I took the brush portion off and used the vibrating part and basically masterbated with it. I remember it feeling so good when I climaxed. I didn't ejaculate. That would, pardon the expression, come later. Since being young, I've never used anything except my own hands to masterbate.
It's probably a factor, but ultimately I think the genetics of when a person starts to experience the natural urges and their own predisposition to act on them and biggest contributors. Knowing exactly what's happening probably helps, whether that's from porn, sex ed, or being told by your parents that those bits aren't just for pissing out of. I was 11 when I first started masturbating to orgasm, and I had never seen porn or graphic nudity stronger than topless, so it wasn't a factor for me, and I'd guess that puts me towards the younger end of the spectrum for self-discovery.

Totally by accident. I was used to getting hot and bothered when I'd look at "dirty" pictures (having older brothers, sometimes you catch a glimpse).
