I listen to a rock station most days as I'm driving to and from work, and it's pretty much about the only good station I get around here as everything else has songs that suck so I can't just switch to another station. Nickelback is the only group I will literally turn the radio off for about three or four minutes whenever I hear one of their songs starting to play.

Same here. I can take 'em or leave 'em. I think some of their songs are kinda catchy. But we live in a time of disposable, trashcan music. And throw in the (truly) suck glam/hair bands that Mayhem mentioned, Nickelback isn't even in the worst of the worst, IMO.
Here's what's weird to me though: quite a few of the British people that I know can't stand Dire Straits. I find that really hard to believe. That is one amazing ass band, IMO! But a lot of Brits react to Dire Straits the way a lot of Americans and Canadians do to Nickelback. Weird!
Never understood all the hatred. At least they rock. I'm not even sure if people really don't like them or if everyone has just jumped on the bandwagon of pretending to hate them so they sound cool.

I liked them the first time I heard of them with that song "This is how you remind me". I even bought the album. But I got bored of them pretty quickly: it's always the same stuff recycled over and over and over again.

They are a bit of a guilty pleasure. I am a bit of a music snob but they have written a few catchy tunes. After a while there will be a new band to pick on. I don't think I would pay money for their tunes though.
That's two different creatures. Different brands, about the same level of sucking.
To some of us haters "ok" is just not good enough; hence the hatred. Running gag or not, call it however you want.
