Do you get chills/goosebumps when it comes to the America flag?

Call it naive, sentimental, nationalistic, xenophobic or whatever I don't give a fuck. You all are a bunch of Little-Red-Book-reading pussies. I know what it represents and I acknowledge those who have sacrificed everything under it's banner.

For all it's faults, America is the greatest country in the world and has been the greatest force for good. Don't ever forget it. Imagine the course of world history 20th century without it.

Especially, when I glance at the flag encased in the wooden triangle that was draped over my father's casket.

Mr. Daystar

In a bell tower, watching you through cross hairs.
No, but I most definitely do when watching documentaries about war, or movies like Band of Brothers, or Saving Private Ryan.

Every once and awhile I feel it's important to remind myself the price that others have paid for my freedom.

That's because you have no respect for men and women that have sacrificed so much, so you can be....what you are. But I guess it's hard to feel something for someone else, when you're hollow inside, and can't respect yourself. Maybe Johan needs a room mate, sounds like France is the place for you.

Life and observing people has taught me the dangers of placing too much emotional importance and emphasis on inanimate objects and material things. I can separate what the flag represents from the actual flag. Plus if I'm not going to place to much emphasis on a graven image of somebody I actually worship how much less would I for something that's only a country.

While the US has done a lot of good, it also has done a lot of bad and has been more hypocritical about it than a lot of other places. The flag no less represents all the bad the US has done than it represents the good. American exceptionalism is a myth. We have a tendency in this country that is only slowly starting to change where we espouse all the good we have done and turn a blind eye to all our massive faults and flaws. We are what we are and got ahead of other places through unique unlikely circumstances and lucky situations as much as anything else. While we aren't the worst place in the world by far it's a big stretch to think we are definitely the best, we are more free than all other places, we give more opportunity than all other places, or we treat our people better than all other places.

This needs responding to. This post sums up quite nicely how the liberal mindset works. America, in the liberal mind is built on ill gotten gains. There is not one time that the garden variety lib such as this clown can cite the good that America has done in the world without citing that this representative republic is also the greatest monster that humankind has ever created.

Tell the people of Europe in the early and mid parts of the 20th century that American Exceptionalism is a myth. You don't understand the word "exceptionalism" as it does not mean superiority but rather that it means that it is unique in its ability to offer a better way of life and more opportunity than any country on this planet and to be a beacon of hope and a blueprint for freedom to other countries. The flaws and mistakes that this country has, have been implemented not by the principles that it was founded on, but by the misguided interpretations of those that found themselves making the decisions for this country.

The United States and its system of government is young compared to other countries and yet it rose to being the world's superpower(for now) not by raping and pillaging other countries but by giving them a little taste of freedom when they could and by rewarding risk takers that were willing to make sacrifices the opportunity to live a better life and to achieve wealth. The opportunity is there for those that seek it and are willing to pursue it. ANYBODY!

I wouldn't trade this country with any other country or government that has ever existed and people are scratching and clawing and crossing the borders trying to come here because of America's exceptionalism and the opportunities that it offers.

So while we have made our mistakes, they pale in comparison to other countries and plenty of men and women died to protect this "unexceptional" hell hole and its freedoms.

Do us all a favor asshat, and go and try and live the lifestyle you live anywhere else in the world and make the same living and get back to us. Better yet, just give the opportunity that you enjoy to someone else that is willing to assimilate and contribute and save us all the trouble of hearing about your miserable existence and how this country gave you a raw deal.

Actually, I could have saved myself a lot of time by just responding with a simple fuck you.

Depends on the context, I don't get goosebumps when I put my flag out every morning, but there are times when seeing Old Glory just pushes me off that cliff and I tear up like a child.

 And the one draped over my grandfather's casket.

I defy anyone who considers themselves an American to visit the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington and witness the changing of the guard. If you don't feel something, you don't have a soul.

I actually was quite pleased with D-Rock's post... and in a way your answer is confirming his response.

American exceptionalism is a myth and the believe in it by US citizens is one of the big annoyances in the rest of the world. Nobody is denying that the US is top notch, important in the world, with fine people. But many Americans are so patriotic and very susceptible when one questions this concept of exceptionalism. You'll stand in a circle jerking to the flag shouting "We're number one! We're the best!" And you'll tell the US is the land of the home and the free, but if anyone criticizes anything it's "fuck you" and "mind your own fucked up country". If you believe your morals are good enough to be imposed on the rest of the world, then you owe that same world the responsibility to live up to those same rules at home. And if you want to set the rules for everyone else to follow, don't break those same rules.

You don't understand the word "exceptionalism" as it does not mean superiority but rather that it means that it is unique in its ability to offer a better way of life and more opportunity than any country on this planet and to be a beacon of hope and a blueprint for freedom to other countries. Yes the US do have a mind blowing military power, great universities, innovative technology, opportunities... But so do a lot of other countries, and your definition of best is merely something that means different, not better. The world wouldn't stop spinning if the US wasn't there.

Of course you were pleased with his post.
But you sit on the sidelines watching the U.S. not as this clown who stakes claim to American citizenship.

Want to test your theory on what happens if the U.S. wasn't there? Since we are dealing with hypotheticals, let's go back and start 70 or 85 years ago in your time machine and see if you are even here to post your opinion on the internet.

I am willing to bet you wouldn't be. We are the greatest country on earth, until somebody comes and takes that distinction from us or we do it ourselves (which we are working on) you'll just have to deal with it.

If course I wouldn't be here. And you wouldn't be here. And every person that is alive on this planet right now wouldn't exist. It would be an entire different world, different technologies, different countries, different whatever, because that's indeed the result of the hypothetical situation when something like an entire country wouldn't be there. And if I travelled back in time in this hypothetical situation I wouldn't even pop up in WWI or WWII since history would be different. But the world would still be turning.

The US is a great country and people can be proud. But claiming you're the best country on earth, leading by example and being #1 in the world in everything is not only living a lie but an insult to the rest of the world.

Is the US a nation without racism, crime, with healthcare for everyone, with equal chances for all? Are you fighting hunger, global warming, poverty in your own country or in the world? Are you the only country with freedom? Is the Us going to war in other countries to bring them unselfishly freedom? No, you're not better than the rest of the planet. But what you have is power, both economically and military. And both are used for gain and profit, not to bring freedom and to show the world why your country is a "leading example". And as long as this misplaced chauvinism keeps insulting the rest of the world you're going to have people burning the US flag and tell you to fuck off, while some American cries on television "But I don't understand, we're bringing them freedom, why do they do that to us?". But keep living a lie. While people like D-rock are aware his nation has faults and it needs to improve, chauvinists like you are just standing in a circle jerking off to the flag doing nothing. At one point you might wake up and see China owns you, and your industry and infrastructure in your country is getting old, and more and more scientists from other countries do have the top positions in your tech industry and universities, and so on. Your empire is crumbling.

Name a country that is better, and before you name some country with low poverty rates and low crime statistics also make sure that they can come to their allies rescue on a moments notice and project power both militarily and economically before you answer. With all that is wrong with our system it is still the best on earth, the decline of the American way of life is not because of its founding principles it is because of tinkering through social engineering and socialist policies that slowly but surely gaining a foothold in out society. There is nothing that we can do to please you people. We have elected the most liberal president in out nation's history and still we can do nothing right.

You see, I don't really care what you or others think of our flaws because what this all boils down to is that you are envious. No other country has its mistakes scrutinized under a microscope as does the United States for all the world to see. Try that with China, Russia or the former Soviet Union and you will see deep dark secrets of oppressed people and killings at the hands of their government and they want their dirty little secrets kept hidden forever.

I am not sure of your nationality, I thought you might be from the UK. Thankfully, there are still enough people in that region of the world that understand that if America fails, the prospects for freedom and prosperity fails with it.

As for arrogance, well we are. But we are sister countries with the other democracies in the world. The pretty one.
