Do you gamble?

No, I get that, it was my uncles choice to start gambling. And it was his choice to continue gambling, and his choice to end his life rather than get help. Thats exactly why I'm refraining from making the choice to gamble because no matter how much control you think you have over things like gambling, drinking, drugs, shopping, eating...WHATEVER....sometimes you don't realize just how far into it you are until its too late.

Very true

I don't go to casinos, but I will place a bet on a horse race at an OTB. Also, if there is a big name boxing event or during football season/Superbowl I will place bets.

We're also opening up a Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville which I am ecstatic about! :D

I did spotlight for Jimmy Buffett last October. I had a margarita during Margaritaville.

I'm a contract dealer so I work for Caesars when I have to. They own the WSOP franchise, so I work for them at the WSOP and the circuit events I've worked in the past.

You should know that Caesars is considered the Evil Empire. Make sure you carefully read everything you sign. And never trust them. No one actually likes working for them. We just do so because there really isn't much choice.

I absolutely LOVE working for Caesars.. Granted I work for a subsidiary, Horseshoe but I have had nothing but positive experiences.. From the interview process being totally quirky and original (I had to impersonate a famous person and make my favorite animal noise lol) to my supervisors being freakin awesome to the amazing benefit package to the Employee Dining Room where it's a huge buffet and only 3 dollars.. Plus it looks like a fancy lounge or something.. I also was able to create my own shift based on a shift lottery.. The pay is great and I haven't been this happy with a company since like... ever.

That's what drove me up the wall with them. I was asked to apply to the Horseshoe-Hammond and they did the same thing with me....and I'm more than happy to admit I tanked the damn thing. I can deal the biggest Pot-Limit games in the world, I can spend the night keeping the most difficult players in the world happy, I just had an evening at the Tropicana where my Blackjack table stayed full all night while the table of the immensely attractive girl dealer next door stayed empty.......and all of it takes a back seat to me not lowering myself to making animal noises and drawing a blank in regard to celebrity impersonations. And poker players want you to shut up and deal. They don't want charm and witty repartee, they want the next hand out now, and it dealt competently and smoothly. None of that was a concern during the interview process.

Mind you, in the Hostess line of work, I can see how this sort of thing works. But painting every employee with the same brush doesn't work. And this has been proven. I did my interview thing back in 2009, maybe 2010, and since then Horseshoe-Hammond has sent out a couple of maydays trying to get dealers into their poker room. Based on my experience, it's obvious why one of the best poker rooms in the country is chronically short handed.

Mostly blackjack. I tend to win more than I lose, but I don't win big.
If I can play for a couple of hours and have fun with my friend and or my wife while playing, then if I come close to breaking even I feel I'm up.

Yea, please watch the table first before getting chit chatty. I'm in a 2-4 limit Texas at Showboat with my last white chip in for small blind. Come around to me and I call 1 with a red chip. Dealer pulls it all to the middle, throws chips into the rake box tosses me 3 white. Dude is nice and chatty with the other players and I stop him because he shorted me a buck. He says he didn't. I put in 6 and got back 3, where did the other dollar go? He says he doesn't know, maybe someone else took it. Asks if I want him to stop the game and look at the video? I'm not going to do that for a buck. I'm not the kind of guy to make a fuss. I played the hand and left. Told the poker boss the situation and he couldn't give a shit. Everybody loved that dealer.

That was the last time I have stepped into a Bally's Caesar's property. A previous incident of getting blown off at Harrah's totally unrelated set the stage for this. It wasn't about the buck. The dude didn't do his job. First he made a mistake and wouldn't correct it, then he says someone else may have taken my buck. That's not watching the money on the table. This guy is dealing other games and handling lots of money. I take my money elsewhere.

I agree with you.. I don't think poker dealers should have the same type of interview process because they pretty much just sit down and deal.. they don't really even converse with the players. The other table games dealers are more talkative and entertaining then poker dealers have to be.. My job is like 90% customer service based 10% machine knowledge based so I think the interview process caters more to the beverage/slots/table games (non poker) positions because you have to be outgoing and friendly.

I hope you don't think I was in any way being critical of what you're doing, Nikki. Quite the contrary, I'm happy for you and I wish you all the success in the world. All I wanted to impart to you, as an 18 year vet in this industry, is be careful and don't get too trusting. Always remember that the Casino industry runs on the Golden Rule: He Who Has the Gold, Makes the Rules. Always watch your back, take nothing at face value, be careful about the information you give, remember the information you receive and know for a fact that someone wants what you have.

So, does that mean that when I go visit you and Nick I can go see you at work and you'll keep me boozed up on the house? :D

Yes, I was a small time professional gambler for several years. Made a decent though certainly not glitzy living doing it. Didn't gamble on casino games because there's no value there. Mostly I played the horses, while also betting on sports. These are forms of gambling where you can shop for value - where you're competing against other gamblers instead of the almighty house. Sometimes I played poker too, either seven card stud high low or pot limit omaha high low. Both very interesting games, which Texas Hold 'Em, despite being all the rage, is not (in my opinon).

I once gambled and lost. I had to change my pants afterwards... :o

No not at all :) I lived in Vegas for a while so I've heard the horror stories and what not.. I suppose I'm not as extremely worried about it for me here at this casino because I babysit for the Asst. General Manager of the casino so I've got him lookin out for me.. I actually applied to be a beverage server because besides being a nanny serving is all I know but he sat me down and told me it's my choice but he thinks slots is a much better place because there is much more room for growth. He started in slots 8 years ago and is now the asst GM.. So if I follow in his footsteps I could be in a great position by 31.. So now I don't get to wear the cute cocktail outfits ( :( ) but I hopefully can move myself to supervisor in the next year or two. :D

Ha. Well Ohio state law, no serving alcoholic drinks for free.. You have to charge something.. Which is lame but that's Ohio for ya.. I'll get you all the free pepsi you want! :D

New Jersey is going to make online gambling legal there.

I go up to the casino entrance, hand the doorman 20 bucks and walk away.

It's in the books and it should be up and running before year's end. Win win for everyone in NJ. I don't think it will take much of a toll on the tourism or in house gaming there though. The place has been seeing revenue drop for nearly 10 years. The Sands was knocked down, Trump lost the Marina to Wynn and Plaza is bankrupt. The Tropicana and Hilton sold to other outfits. Revel is $1.2 billion in debt after being open for just a year. Can't get much worse now.

Being that on line gaming is limited to NJ residents, I only see this as a float for those houses. Nevada and Delaware are gearing up for on line too. Sports betting is being fought in federal court and if NJ wins then that will fill the empty rooms down there.

Those greedy bastards in Trenton and AC went out of their way to fuck that place up. A mandatory parking tax eliminated free parking perks. 15% room tax. The city put in a smoking ban (later rescinded). All at the same time that Delaware, NY, and PA started opening up shop. Harrah's, with 3 in AC, saw the storm coming and set up in Chester, PA minutes from the entrance to the AC expressway. from Philadelphia.

No one in the "brick and mortar" poker industry, that I know of, sees internet poker as a bad thing. In fact, most support it wholeheartedly. The lack of it hasn't hurt the WSOP, which is a major surprise to me. As a tournament dealer, it's a good thing for me. The more money that floats around, the more people in non-gambling states can make a buck and therefore travel to major tournaments. I'll admit, I was leery of it for a few years, but again, it's done me nothing but good, so cheers.

I've heard that PA getting casinos is going to drive the final nails into AC's coffin.
