There are more people alive right now than have EVER lived and died up to the present, our resources are running scarce, and you really don't think we are overpopulated??

I always use this analogy -
Get up on google earth and skate East - West - North & South across the USA and see for yourself how desolate that this nation is.
Personally, I think that our natural resources, if managed properly, will provide many many future generations with raw material resources. That is, if the government would allow us to acquire some of them, namely oil. It's plentiful ! let's get it !
I am not surprised.
In all fairness to the people how do they know your friend isn't some nutjob who will pull a gun on them as soon as they pull over and try and help him out? It's a sad statement on society but these are the times we live in.

Just what I see.
People like to live too close to one another. Look at New York and LA. We have plenty of natural resources too. We are being lied to all the time about everything.

Exactly. We live in a country (world) that slows down on the highway just to see the aftermath of a horrible traffic accident. Honestly, it doesn't surprise me that two people hit this woman and kept on going. The thing that does surprise me, is that I'm surprised it doesn't happened more often.

Because most people don't get into their car with the intention of harming, running over or killing someone. Somebody who walks into a store and robs it with a gun has every intention of harming somebody (whether you consider it to be physically, financially or emotionally).
I'm using a bicycle in urban/sub-urban Montreal area since forever ( I don't even have a driver liscence).. Drivers here are not different than those in USA i would assume.
After roughly 25 years, if there is something i learned while driving my bicycle is... When you are on a bicycle on the road, you are the one risking his life. So why leaving your life in the hands of others?
Don't trust cars
Don't trust road signs
Don't trust other bicyclists
Assume the worste decisions from drivers
The more paranoiac you are, the better.
And I never had a single accident so far...
Sadly enough, that lady was hit from behind and there is very little you can do as a bicyclist to protect yourself regarding that.
