The argument about Democrats and slavery is quite odd. The Republican Party is not exempt - maybe it should be ******.

After the Civil War the Democratic party was the party of segregation in the south. It was the party in the south until LBJ signed civil rights legislation. Then, those Democrats became Republicans. Why did Strom Thurmond change his party affiliation in September 1964?
