Definition: Football = Football | American Football ≠ Football

Yeah, maybe we should find another term for it ... like Excitingball :D  because unlike SOCCER ... NFL Football is actually exciting. Points actually get scored.

In Soccer there is just a lot of running around back & forth, back & forth, back & forth only to achieve the yet again anticlimactic tie at the end of the game. And a 0 - 0 tie at that. Soccer is full of ALMOSTs.

There's no denying Soccer players are great athletes since they can endure all that running around. Too bad there's so little reward scoring wise for all that athleticism. It is a flawed concept of how to score.

Three lullabies in an ancient tongue
Another one that always perplexes me that it irritates people of other countries so much is the name we gave the World Series for MLB's championship. It's just a name. They probably choose that because it sounded good, and not because we were under any illusions that it was or is a world wide sport.

Yes. We call it the "World Series" because the winner remains unchallenged. So, if there's any other team that exists outside the USA who thinks they could whip the winner of MLB's tournament, I say let themselves be known and bring 'em on. So far, no one has so the name is appropriate.

Every goal in a football match matters, because there aren't 20 or more scored per game. If you care about either of the teams involved, watching that team defend or attack is exhilarating. The problem is, it will be meaningless if you don't care who wins, and you aren't going to care if you don't like the sport. That's the simple fact ; you just don't like it, and there's nothing wrong with that. The vague "I just don't like it" makes far more sense than the "low-scoring game" argument, which makes the viewer sound like they have ADD and can't enjoy something for more than ten seconds unless there's scoring involved. It's tactics, it's chess. It's keeping the ball and tiring the opposition out so when you try and score in the last 15 minutes, they can't resist. It's soaking up some pressure to counter attack, going from one end of the pitch to the other in a matter of seconds and scoring. It's the last minute equalizers, the upsets, the debatable penalties.

Yes, there are some shit games. Every team at every level is involved in a few. But at its best, it's amazing. Incidentally in this week's 16 Champions League ties, there was a 4-0, a 6-0, a 7-0, a 7-1, a 4-3, two games with dramatic last minute winning goals, 10 games where 3 or more goals were scored and only one 0-0 draw. And that match was Monaco v Benfica, so I bet there was some great football on display. If you're seeing lots of 0-0 draws, you aren't watching a good enough standard of football.

I love it when people bitch about the low scoring in soccer. If you count TDs as 1 point and discard FGs (because obviously, kicking a ball to score a point is fucking stupid), Arizona beat Oakland this past weekend 3-1. Fucking barnburner there. Baltimore beat Atlanta 3-1. Tennessee would have beat Washington 2-1, but that damn kicking for points shit got the Redskin Potatoes the win in real life.

Using some of the NFL fan logic, if soccer awarded 5 points for a goal, soccer would be more fun because the scores would have larger numbers.

What continues to amaze me is the insecurity of NFL fans. I can enjoy most sports for what they are. I don't get some sort of satisfaction out of being a fan of the sport. I don't pat myself on the back because I like the sport that most others do too. I also don't need to diss a sport because it isn't as popular as another. Mouth-breathing, knuckle-dragging, closed-minded simpletons. Phil Hartman would play you in a skit on SNL. Football good. Soccer bad.

Same here.

All of them a have different form of competition.

I just can care less for the bitching that we call it soccer.

The rules of football are to move the ball forward. Half of a soccer match is watching a ball go backwards.

No, I did start this. And, as I expected, the classic way of talking about things here is being kept up.

Which amazes me is that people who make really intelligent posts fall back in this habit of acting like the retard cousin who brags about him being stupid and proud of it.

Do I even hear you chanting 'USA, USA, USA' in front of your monitors? The world knows better, but knuckledraggers from the USA don't want to grow up. And it isn't just sports, as I wrote in a post before, it's the same with so many other issues. Fuck off, we're Number One, we don't need to learn shit.

Of COURSE, you may call it soccer, my retard cousins from across the pond. We are used to your ways. You COULD grasp it, but it's a mental thing. Let's not disturb you.

I get the draw of soccer - the action is always flowing, scoring is at a premium, matches are relatively short, etc. I've watched the last two world cups and some of the premier league stuff on TV and I admit I pretty much don't have a clue what I'm watching as far as what players are good and strategy and what not.

What draws me to American football and the college game in particular are the different offensive schemes and the disparity in talent and speed. The good players and teams really stand out. Less so in the NFL, but even to a casual observer watching Aaron Rodgers it's apparent that that guy can really throw that oblong shaped ball. Or Peyton Manning can really carve up a defense.

No great revelation here, but I think it all just comes down to what you grew up with. I have no doubt that if I were raised overseas where soccer is king, I'd understand and enjoy it alot more.

Also, it's odd that soccer isn't more popular in the U.S. being that most kids play it growing up.

The rules are to put the ball into the oponent's goal.
Wether you go coast to coast on your own,

go back into your half of the field and draw a massive shoot

or go forward by passing the ball one ot another

a goal is goal and every goal give the same amount of points : 1

The rule is to score -at least- one more goal than the other team. Wether you win 1-0, 6-5 or 7-1 doesn't really matter (except that, in case both teams have the same amount of points in the league, the goal-difference is used as tiebreaker).

I know you Soccer fans are just calling it as you all see it. Likewise, we USA Football fans also call it as we see it. And here is how I've seen it ... for years.

At any time of the year, I'll periodically happen across a Mexican TV channel where there is a Soccer game going on as they obviously play it year round. Without knowing how many minutes into the game it is, I'll jokingly go, "I'll bet I know what the score is ... 0 - 0 or 1 - 0." And lo & behold, by and large, overwhelming that is what the score will be even if the game is almost over.

Then this last time around, I got curious as to what all the hoopla was over the World Cup. Periodically I'd pop in on random games. Again, it was mind-boggling how many 0 - 0 games at the end of regulation time I happened upon. There was no mistaking that out of the various games that I checked out ... MOST had to be settled in overtime. And I'm talking 0 - 0 ties, not 1 - 1 ties or 3 - 3 ties, etc.

Sure, there are also overtime games in USA Football here and there. But, definitely not the overwhelming amount of 0 - 0 ties that I see in Soccer. To me that indicates a flawed concept of the game. It's like there is no realistic chance of scoring.

With USA Football on the other hand, the concept is such that teams that are In Yer Face talented have a realistic chance of scoring on all possessions. The concept is also such that there are plenty of talented players that have the potential of scoring on any given play ... even going virtually the length of the field or outright the length of the field in one play in doing so.

From what I've seen of Soccer, it is just not conducive for that to happen.

EXACTLY! :D So WE are NOT the ones with the insecurity.
We know what we like and we watch it.
I don't care that NFL Football is not global. I enjoy the solid, entertaining ACTION. :yesyes:

8 minutes to go and the score is 2-0. The announcers start their wrap up and the fans are heading to the parking lots.

What I should've added is that like hockey, a shot on goal in soccer is pretty intense. You hold your breath for that split second.

I know for a fact that if I put down Madden and picked up FIFA 15 or Winning Eleven I would be a bonafide and knowledgeable fan.

I'm just not ready yet.

Full disclosure: I despise the NFL and looking for any excuse not to watch it.

Just to clear things up. I enjoy watching NFL games. It's a rush. And my hometwon has an American Football team, too, so I can watch games live right here. No hating there
