250$ million dollars for playing the MLS GALAXY....i have to say im pretty excited about the whole thing....but is this going to be good or bad for the league....remeber PELE in the 80's playing for the NY COSMOS and the league going broke

I dont think hes washed up just yet but in 3 or 4 yrs maybe he will be, plus what if he gets injured than what the league is royally screwed
Let me know your thoughts

US is a developing country in football / soccer. David Beckham, despite what some jealous stupid people say, is a very good player and he will do good for the US league because he is always trying, even though he could easily, at this age and with this publicity and name, just go to Qatar or Saudi Arabia for a couple of years and then stop playing.

Yes David Beckham is good for the league, the level is below the high standards of the spanish league. He will improve soccers status in America no doubt. He's still a good player somewhat one dimensional though, no way in Ronaldinho or Zidanes class. He is however from a commercial standpoint great for any club, married to a popstar wife. $ 50 million a year including endorsements is fantastic. Big question can he elevate soccer in the USA to the level of Basketball, Baseball and Gridiron football, no way ! Not even the GOAT Pele could do that. He's a nice guy though and will be a huge celeb in the USA.

He will probably draw in more crowds in the stadiums but not always because of his football. The money the club will make from marketing will be a shitload and the £492,000 a week he will make aint that bad either. Over the past few years he aint done anything for England or Madrid, whenever they showed a clip of David Beckham it was the freekick against Greece which got us to the 2002 World Cup, but the freekick was in 2001. Which goes to shows that apart from deadball situations he aint got that much left.

There was no way his wife would move back to England so thats why he didnt (also £492,000 is a reason aswell I suppose).

There were rumours of my team Newcastle United being interested in him but I would not want him, to much showbiz and hollywood bollocks for me. I aint jealous or anything like that just a football fan who knows his stuff and good luck to the bloke, if he can get someone to pay that much all the best :2 cents:

I think it's an obscene amount of money to be talking about for playing soccer . . .

I mean really . . . . Get a grip . . . .

It makes me want to physically spew my ringer . . . .

It'll all end in tears . . . . . . .

I think the amount of money involved is obscene. It's not jealousy on my part(ok my eyes are turning a little green). Is America ready for the combined charms of King David and Queen Victoria?

David Beckham had skills. Back in the day. He was a great player for Manchester United and to a lesser extent Real Madrid. With 62 goals from 262 league appearences for United and a mere 7 goals in 63 appearences for Real Madrid. He's clearly on the slide. Although, keeping in mind that Real Madrid has an all-star squad with the likes of Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo, Robinho, Raul Bravo, Guti, and fellow ex-red devil Ruud Van Nistelroy, its easy to see why Beckham hasnt been in the limelight as much these days. Beckham is a capable player no doubt; he's played at two of the highest levels of competition in the world, but im yet to see ANYTHING to prove to me he is worth $1.34 Million AU (500,000 pounds) a week.

FUCK THAT SHIT.

It's good to be the king...
Meh....Becks is just a marketing product now who's secured a healthy pay-day for Posh to spend.....

Legends like Bobby Moore, George Best, Pelé and Franz Beckenbauer have tried and failed to elevate "soccer" as a sport in the US. If those guys couldn't do it, I fail to see how Goldenballs can.

David Beckham has gone to the US not for football (soccer) but to promote David Beckham and try to get into the movies. His wife also has a lot to do with this. The stick insect still thinks she has talent both musical and also acting LOL. She's been trying to get screen tests for the last year, both in Britain and America.

So expect a lot of injuries!

I still say that paying a man who first hasn't given anything to football both off the field and on it for the past 4 years is a massive mistake. His whole football talent lays in to things, crossing and freekicks, neither of which he does very well anymore.

This man will ruin what football there is in the US, not help it!

No offence to the US Leagues but Beckham is past his best and isn't good enough for the European Leagues. Although i think it's unfair he's going to be paid a hell of lot more than his future team mates.

It's not so much $250M for 5 years. It's $50m for five years salary. The rest of the $250m is profit sharing and endorsements IF his prescence actually boosts the league profitability.

This Economist article thinks thats not going to happen:
Football in America: Beckham’s away win

Basically they say that they have tried it before when teams from the North American Soccer League (1968-84) signed on Pele and George Best after they were past their prime. It didn't work then and it's not going to work now.

My thoughts exactly, right down to the stick insect wife. Wow your clever poggy, how did you do that

Beckham is an overpaid prick. He's past it here, and going to play footy in a place thats fso wussy they have to wear pads to play foot ball, and get the rules confused with rugby.

He should be in the UK, as he's part of our team, but the yanks are welcome to him, as he's now more of a gimmick. Thanks god he's no longer our international captain.

The whole deal was probably sorted just for Posh to have somewhere new to get her clothes from

He aint gone there for the football, hes gone for the lifestyle, its a bad thing for for football in USA because he wont spend most of the time playing, hes gona go to award shows n shit, y u think Fergie kicked him out, n then the real madrid guy?

don't blame Beckham for taking the money, blame the fools who will pay him

he'll boost the interest for soccer for a year and then us Americans will go back to watching (American) football and baseball

I think it might work out a little better than most people are thinking. I remember when Pele came here back in '76. While it may not have been the commercial success that the league backers were hoping for it did jumpstart a lot of youth soccer in this country.

The kids back then are now adults and many of them are parents. I can envision them going to the games and taking their kids and cultivating possibly life long fandom. However we probably won't know the results of this for another generation or two.

I think that He'll will spark some interest among America's, temporarily yes, but it's the next generartion of American kids in the working class ghettos, blacks kids especially is where the game will blossom. I can se Ronaldo following Beckham to the states also.
