Computer protection

Using a 64 bit version of any OS doesn't make it any more immune to malware. The 64 really only refers to the rate at which data is ****** and processed by your hardware.

x64 is not faster per say... That is controlled by your hardware. x64 allows a wider bandwidth of data, and if an application is written in 64bit the os allows the hardware to take advantage of this. Few aps are available yet, so in practice x64 is not any faster than x86...

x64 will not, and cannot run 16bit aps... many malware installers are 16bit, if an address tries to run one, my machine hangs and tells me a script is not working correctly, and asks if I want to continue running it... just say no and problem solved. There are a couple installers that are newer and do run, but malwarebytes takes them off.

The script hang thing happens often, I run a scanner maybe once every couple of months. That's with no firewall, no security on my router, etc...

I also recommend a free firefox addon called KeyScrambler which encrypts whatever you are typing

For some reason KeyScrambler stopped working after Firefox 3.5, it hasn't received any update since then.

I'm scanning my PC with Avira and Spyware Doctor right now. Didn't find anything big so far.
Anyway, my former teacher who is so badass that he's one of the only two men in town who can fix a Mac once said that the only way to keep your computer away from danger is to unplug the internet cable. I suppose that's right. Even with those paid software you can't be 100% safe on the net.

All of the major hardware out there does take advantage of x64s bandwidth additions, that's what I meant when I said faster, but you're right, it's not inherently faster.

I see what you're saying with 16 bit apps, but Microsoft has taken great strides to provide converters to allow the 16 bit installers and processes to be run as 32 bit installers and processes, and for the money, most of the malware that comes from porn sites unfortunately takes advantage of this. Again it really comes down to the user, as there is only a certain level of security you can guarantee, and having worked in networking security, I can tell you that's unfortunately not how people think.

Panda anti virus there your sorted. A restore partition on your hard drive as well.

My current computer is a lot of junk put together. I mean, it has only 512 RAM, and the less worse part of it, which was a nVidia GeForce Fx5500, stopped working in November. So I think I'd be happy if this thing broke for good so I could get a new one.

Well, after over six and a half hours, Avira's scan is at 92% finished and it got 10 detections so far, but I'm not sure where they came from.

Man that sounds dire. But anyway turn off system restore, Type MSCONFIG into the run command line. Find safe boot options reboot in safe mode then run your viral scan again it and remove them then. Reboot normally and turn system restore back on. You do this cause if you ever use system restore you will just put the **** back onto your computer. Also I would suggest going into the registery only probably not a good idea if you havent done it before.

PS> Panda should run on your computer, Aint sure what that software is your using but Panda is really good and not as big a resource bitch as norton(Also alot of vulnerabilities this one as its the standard the hackers and other dicks use to crack)

Yeah, my teacher taught us all that you said does the trick, but even that way it's not 100% safe. As I said my computer is a huge piece of ****, but once I get a really good computer, I'll make it motherfucking safe. Thanks for reminding me of those tricks, BTW. I had forgotten 'bout them.

Yea you do forget them had to read up command lines myself and even read up on port forwarding. As for website **** I used to know long gone are html days sadly in the uk if you do computer science mate telling me they still teaching that **** and its outta date.

PS> Tbh a reformat is the best thing if you have a ton of viral **** on you computer. Removing it wont negate any damage or skullduggery it has committed in the registery.

The course I'm on is not too advanced, at least the first two years weren't. A big part of the most interesting and useful stuff like that isn't on the proper course, but the teachers tell us just because.

Nah, I don't think I reformatting will be necessary, I found many threats because I don't scan my computer so often. It's usually already slow, with a anti virus scan running it gets awful. But i didn't find anything gross like a blaster for example LOL

I use Kaspersky, but lately it's been letting everything through. I had Windows Security Essentials, until something got in and blocked it. So I downloaded Spybot S&D and ran it, and it found 50 things, with 42 it couldn't remove, including PUPS programs and one hijack program. Came to find out that to remove them, I simply had to run SBSD "as the administrator." It worked.
