Censorship: What the fuck?

I have to advise you: Come to Europe, the actual Land of the Kinda Free - at least about cursing on TV.

It is always great to watch Late-Night shows with US-american guests, especially rappers and comedians when the host ask about their lyrics and surely says all the fuck shit, etc and they go WTF??? Did you just say that on live TV?

And when they hear that it is absolutely fine to say all that , they enjoy themselves and freestyle a bit with their songs like they should be done.

Fuck Censorship!

I'm pretty sure that is an urban legend. I always heard it was derived from the Germanic Fukkan which means "to fornicate"

I have also heard it was Nordic for "To Forcefully Bore a Hole"

But it is unanimous that it is not an acronym. Sorry to burst your bubble.

I also hate censorship. Censorship ruins artistic visions. I mean the word Darn does not have the impact of Damn. And when they just cut words it is straight up jarring.

What bubble? What exactly does that mean anyway? I wasn't aware of there being a bubble to burst. I read your wiki thing and they said a lot of things about where fuck came from and they didn't substantiate any of it because in their own words they just didn't know for sure where fuck came from. Then they went on to say where fuck didn't come from but alas they were also unable to substantiate that. So my metaphorical bubble remains intact. But then again who gives a fuck.

Again, actual censorship exists on only PBS, FOX, NBC, CBS, or ABC. The people, not the gumment, decide what they want to watch. If it was lucrative to have a gay, nude, American Idol, there'd be one. For under a dime a day.

You got that right LaLi. I'm watchin Justified (DVR). I'm half through and I've heard shit 4 times, asshole twice, and I saw Raylan's ex wife's tities bouncin around for a split second. I love FX.

I disagree Lx5. Editing or suppressing information to match a standard of public opinion is the definition of censorship. Just because a person "self censors" doesn't mean that it's not censorship, otherwise that statement wouldn't make sense.

Furthermore, Martin Scorsese, the film's director, wasn't the one that changed it. No one who made the movie did; it wasn't self censorship. So what difference does it make whether it was the TV network or a government agency? It was a group of people changing what someone else had made.

You know what pisses me off more than censorship?

I think it's common knowledge. The other acronym it is alleged to represent is:

Fornication
Under
Consent of the
King.

I'm pretty sure that is an urban legend. I always heard it was derived from the Germanic Fukkan which means "to fornicate"

Fuck is my favorite word, even if it isn't a word at all. Not a lot of people know this but fuck is an acronym.

For
Unlawful
Carnal
Knowledge

I argue with my mom all the time when she tells me to stop saying that awful "word".

When people misuse the term acronym.

When a word or phrase is shortened to include only part of the word, it's an abbreviation. Such as Mgr, for Manager, and Dr. for Doctor.

An abbreviation that consists of only the first letter of each word in a phrase is called an intialism. Such as AARP, FBI, PETA, and STFU.

An intitialism that spells out a pre-existing word, usually a description of the phrase that it's abbreviating, is an acronym. Such as DARE: Drug Abuse Resistance Education, and ICE: Immigration Cocksucker Enforcement (or something like that.)

So next time someone claims that PTA,NASA, or any other nonsense word is an acronym, tell them they are an ASSHOLE. And when they ask what that is an acronym for, kick them in the genitals.

Comedy Central goes full frontal at night. Think it's like after 1am or something. Watched Jackass on there and there was no censorship. Eventually the FCC will have no power anymore and everything will be full of violence, language, nudity. :2 cents:

.

You know what pisses me off more than the misuse of acronyms?

People who willfully suck the fun out of a topic out of sheer dickery.

I feel lucky to live in a Scandinavian country in this respect. I have always wondered howcome americans tolerate a system that defends censorship and moral majority in so many ways. You find it in music, movies, tv, and I guess: everyday life! America produces so much porn that without it U probably would be down in a much deeper hole, economically. You can't show a pair of tits to young people - that's sooooo wrong. But you can have a gun and shoot the hell out of everyone who touches your damn lawn without being prosecuted. AND: often refer to Scandinavia as countries with socialistic tendencies, or whatever negative, claiming America as the most free country around! Now that can only make you laugh/weep depending on where you are!
Sorry if I offended anyone - not intented!

You know what pisses me off? Trolls, people that go around looking for the pettiest shit they can get their grubby little keyboard clicking hands on and making a big fuckin deal out of it just to look cool to all the other self hating toughgeeks on the board. Who are you, Webster? You really need to get a grip if the misuse of a word upsets you that much. That goes for all the assholes around here who's sole purpose is to make other peoples experiences miserable. Piss off. I'm here to have some fun.

Censorship is a legal process, not a corporate one. If you're going to appoint yourself sheriff of Word County, read the rulebook first.

Furthermore, the difference between a TV network and a government agency is that cable TV networks won't fine themselves a half million dollars or threaten to surrender their broadcasting license if they let a "fuck" or "shit" slip. Standards and Practices cannot censor anything. The can only make recommendations.

Corporate content policy is about procuring sponsors. Federal censorship is about decency. According to them.

Disputing the difference between corporate policy and Federal mandate is beyond absurd.

^ exactly that!

What strikes me as odd on American TV is partly this kind of censorship, but for the most part it's the censorship of sex, nudity and language but the allowance of large amounts of pretty in your face violence. Now I'm not for the censorship of anything but the people who run TV stations have set themselves up with a rather strange double standard there, violence fine, sex/bad language not? Questions that need to be asked are why is one more suitable for an audience than the other and what is going to have more of a negative effect on a population bad language/sex or violence? It seems to me that if they were trying to uphold some sort of 'standard' it would be the violence that would be held back, not the language - but then again what do I know. I'm guessing this is just a throwback to the old puritanism that must filter through a lot of American Christian society where fornication (whether under the command of the king ;) or not) is seen as a sin and violence can be justified. There probably are better reasons for this that make more sense but this is what I'm going with right now.

Maybe a way to combat this would be to institute a 'watershed' for all US TV stations like they have in the UK. After 9pm, anything (within reason) can be said or shown on terrestrial TV without fear of fine or any other controversy that may occur.

Move to Sweden, we don´t censor anything here on TV.

I totally agree. Think of what is acceptable, and what is not. Can't say the word "fuck," on tv, but the word "rape," is completely ok. And in essence, which is worse? Fucking, in the sexual sense, is simply that. And rape? Rape is an unwanted, violent, forceful fuck! Total idiocy.

Censorship is a legal process, not a corporate one. If you're going to appoint yourself sheriff of Word County, read the rulebook first.

Which rulebook are you talking about? The one that I use to define words is a dictionary, which doesn't make distinctions towards words based on the organization that is using them.

Arguing that censorship is only limited to government process is the equivalent of saying that you can't kill someone unless a court decries it murder, or that you can't be dishonest unless you are guilty of perjury.

For instance Freeones forbids it's members from talking about certain things and posting certain content, and if one does so, they will be banned and their posts will be removed or edited. Would you say that is not censorship? Fine, if you want to throw out that definition, but it becomes rather pointless since the word loses it's meaning but the action stays the same.

It's funny that I received much praise and rep for a post where I talked about how people commonly misuse Irony, but I get flamed for doing the same for Acronym.

Don't get pissed off at me just because people don't know what the fuck they are talking about when they speak (type).

i've always found the censorship of sexuality and language to be a bit bizarre since most violence is left unedited or minimally edited, apparently tits are more dangerous than bullets
