Can a Virus or Trojan make a Computer EXLPLODE?!

I don't know much about computer viruses, but my friend was arguing with me that it's possible a computer virus can make a PC blowup. Like in Die Hard with a Vengeance if so how? :surprise:

Yyes if the virus is made to burn hardware. It's not impossible.

Thanks. That's what I wanted to know. P.s I mean DIE HARD 4.0 not Die Hard with a Vengeance

Your friend is spending more time at the movies than in front of a pc. And does a lousy job interpreting the movie as well. Those computers had explosives in them and if someone pressed CTRL+ALT+DEL it was triggered (you see this little lights switching in the movie). A virus could at best crash your pc and make it stop working.

Yes. Yes it can. Best to free yourself from the shackles of technology now while you still can and live your life free from fear in a state of blissful self awareness. Free yourself now while you still can, don't be like the rest of us living day to day with this knowledge lodged deep within all of our minds that at any moment it could be our last because our perpetual lust for freedom and happiness was just too strong for us to bear alone without the need to share it with the world.

Go, live your life. Be the Luddite we all secretly want to be, it's not too late for you to forgo this tyranny.

Explode is probably the wrong word to use but if you have a weak power supply in the computer and lots of hardware plugged in i guess that a virus could activate all the hardware which could overheat the power supply and that could in a worst case scenario cause a fire.

No, a virus can't make your computer "explode". At most, and this is still extremely unlikely, a virus might overclock certain components and make your computer overheat. If you keep nitroglycerin next to your computer that might be bad.

Short answer: no

Long answer: viruses can theoretically make a computer damage its own hardware (and a few of the really early home computers actually suffered this fate). But what you end up with is at worst a broken computer and a foul smell.

Most likely, not explode. However,

...it is possible for a virus to ... perform operations harmful to your computer's hardware. For example, constant rebooting or changing your monitor's display to a setting it cannot support can damage or destroy the hardware. A virus can , in some instances, also overwrite firmware (ROM) which would render a piece of hardware useless.

Your fiend is right, you see when they build computers they use a highly explosive substance to power them called ChemicalX. A good hacker can ignite this chemical as what we would like to call Virus or Trojan. Not only can it blow up your computer but sometimes the side of your house.

Be careful of what porn site you go to it just may be your last. Also don’t touch yourself God is watching.

I'm far from a computer expert, but that's what I was thinking too.

On a similar topic, there was a really interesting report on 60 Minutes about a year ago having to do with viruses. While not meant to make a computer explode, they demonstrated a virus which caused a power generation station to explode. It shut down the failsafes and caused the pressures to build until it went kaboom! The report was meant to detail how easy it would be for foreign agents to cripple our power grid using nothing more than (well made) computer viruses.

If viruses could blow up computers, Anonymous would be the most powerful group in the world.
