California Gubernatorial Recall

I had forgotten about Gary running until I read another article. Larry Flynt also ran. As did former MLB Commissioner Peter Ueberroth. It sounds like it may not be too different this year.

The recall election cycle would make a great reality show. It's all the entertainers that can't get jobs in entertainment. In the right hands that could be mighty entertaining. I would pay them if they allowed me to be a part of the creative team.

I know of a reality star in need of a new show. The Apprentice: California Dreaming.

Turn it up to 11

Duf Sundheim (CA Republican chair during the 2003 recall):
"I don’t think the circus nature of it [the recall] will detract. I think it does provide the potential to focus attention. The volume’s turned up.”

It is interesting to note that over the last 60 years, Republicans have held the governorship for 32 of them. The split is more even than most realize. Gavin cannot be feeling very comfortable right now.

... Just kidding! :)

He's only been dead 50 years or so. Still a viable candidate. Certainly better than The Donald

I thought you were talking about Bruce in a very politically correct manner but Brucey's thingy was thrown in the dumpster not even 5 years ago. Lon Chaney Jr is not only dead but he drinks too much. Very middle of the road candidate but a possible dark horse as well. Gary Coleman died much more recently but we haven't heard from his camp if he's running yet. If Steve Garvey could go back in a time machine to 1978 he'd also run in the recall election.

You were told it was going to be a circus. I bet we live up to the hype even in a sequel.

How Kayne West? He wanted to the President. Being California's governor would give him some experience.

If not him, how about Kim Kardashian? Start a little family feud with her former in-law.

76,000 California inmates now eligible for earlier releases
https://news.yahoo.com/76k-california-violent-career-felons-020417786.html

California is giving 76,000 inmates, including violent and repeat felons, the opportunity to leave prison earlier as the state aims to further trim the population of what once was the nation’s largest state correctional system.

More than 63,000 inmates convicted of violent crimes will be eligible for good behavior credits that shorten their sentences by one-third instead of the one-fifth that had been in place since 2017. That includes nearly 20,000 inmates who are serving life sentences with the possibility of parole.

He will need every vote he can get. The felon vote could win him the election.

Please tell me there is more to this.
Are we seriously saying that those on life w/o parole now suddenly qualify for it?

Also what is 1/3 or 1/5 of a life sentence anyways?

Not really.

No. Life with parole offenders would qualify.

Good question. I do not know, but if you asked me to do the math: I would find the offender's place on an actuarial table when sentenced, get the life expectancy, multiply the difference by 0.67, and that expected sentence would be applied to the offender's date when sentenced. It would then be up to the offender to determine if he was going to under- or over-perform against the table. :)

In a more serious tone, Newsom (like most politicians) is in a no-win situation. He wants to appeal to progressives so this is a way to pander to them. The right will hammer him. A few years back, California got in trouble for overcrowded prisons. How do you fix overcrowded prisons? (a) reduce the population or (b) build more capacity. Building additional capacity costs money and taxes. Releasing prisoners is inexpensive and gets you kudos from your base.
