I'd assumed that it was the standard media crusade to distract from domestic problems tactic.

No, it's not ridiculous. The British government is going to outsource this to a Chinese company, which apparently has all the technology and expertise required. What this means that it is about to import Chinese Internet censorship technology and regulations into the British isles. Once everything is in place and up and running the government can always adjust the criteria used for censoring content.

The question is if you trust your government to stop at porn...
