Body modification...wtf ?

How do you say "That's fucking gnarly!" in Polish?

Wow, amazing stuff! Those ear-disc things really gross me out for some reason. This is soooo not for me, but I think the skull guy #8 looks pretty cool.

Legzman

what the fuck you lookin at?
some people take it way to far.

Damn! I have 00's in my ears, one 12 in the eyebrow, and one in my labret (not dirty, it's the little nook under your lower lip), but that article chronicles the excessive.

I love ladies with tats, though. Especially sleeves and neck tats. Piercings, not so much. They usually just get in the way. Tramp stamps are way overrated too. Be original.

Don't mean to sound like a dumbass, but what are 00's and 12s? :dunno:

that is the standard(?) gauging for thickness of needles/jewelry used in cosmetic piercings. I'm not really sure what exactly the US or metric length of each unit is, it may vary.

Generally the smallest (thinnest) size is 20g(auge). the average size that people get their ears pierced with by a machine or needle is 18g or 16g. The smaller the number, the thicker the gauge. Obviously 0 is the smallest (I think it's around 1/4 inch), but they have made larger jewelry and added the size 00 (double zero) g. For sizes thicker than that they just refer to the metric or US length of measurement.

As far as I know they usually don't make any needles larger than 12g. What people usually do is get the initial piercing around that size and then use an apparatus to stretch the skin to accommodate larger pieces of jewelry. Larger holes can be made in the body for places where the skin is less susceptible to stretching using a scalpel or some other cutting device, but this is not usable recommended since you want to remove the least amount of flesh to avoid potential problems with blood flow and such.

Well, thats a good way to become a social outcast.

Which isnt necessarily a bad thing I suppose, but im sure there are better ways of going about it, rather than disfiguring your body.....:dunno:

That's kind of an unfair double standard Blue, don't you think? I don't see what the problem is in letting people do with their own body what they see fit to their standards of self-image or beauty.

The original purpose of body modification was to have a characteristic about yourself that you had in common and was special to your tribe, so it had to be something other than God given. This would almost always be accompanied with a ritual that was painful and as you say disfiguring to test your personal merit and show your devotion to your peers by willing to endure the ordeal. Of course these things usually were voluntary and not mandatory, which also made them special and was the only fair thing to do. When one standard, especially an unnatural one is forced upon the group, that is a bad thing.

That is what tattoos and body piercings were used for, to create a tighter bond of society.

Im sorry if my sarcasm wasnt as prominent in my post as I first thought.

I was thinking along the lines of hair dye, extreme dieting and plastic surgery in our society. is that what you were getting at?

To tell you the truth im not quite sure what I was getting at.

I do belive that the rise of plastic surgery in society has become far to over used. But as you say what people want to do with their own bodies is their business and I have no right to judge them for it :hatsoff:
