Boardwalk Empire

Was King of the Board for a Day
I just lost my HBO subscription (I signed up for a free 3-month trial, something like that) and won't be able to watch tonight's episode. I don't know how depressed I should feel over this :dunno:

the second episode i feel was a little weak but i did enjoy it.
the characters seem to be historically accurate, thats nice.
the ending however made no sense.
al capone beats up a guy in chicago and he winds up wandering around the pine barrens bloodied and bashed?

The second episode was sort of weak but I'll still keep watching.

Great show. HBO returns to Sopranos form.

The cast is amazing. Steve Buscemi is on top form, glad to see him in a lead role.

Warming up to him in this role.....I suppose you could get used to a pebble in your shoe if you had no choice.:o

al capone steals every scene he's in, and even the guy from house almost seems like he can act in this show. almost.
but it moves so slowly sometimes. still, it's one of the better shows right now, so i'll keep watching.

I've just caught onto this show over the last couple weeks and thus far have not been disappointed. One of my favorite programs lately.

I gave up on this show. It was good, but not enough to keep me coming back each week. Very forgettable, IMO. Maybe I'll catch up when the DVD comes out.

Stephen Graham is proving to be one great actor...every time I see him in a movie....I think hapless "Tommy" (another great role for him) from 'Snatch' but in a few seconds he makes you forget all about that character.

He played Baby Face Nelson in another one of my favs, "Public Enemies" and was great in that role too.

This show is beautifully shot. Great costumes, style and camera work. Good, but not great writing and acting, IMO. Technically, it's really well done. Overall, I like it. The only quibble I have is that they sometimes try to apply 21st Century sensibilities to the 1920's. Whether it be Rome or other period dramas, I guess that usually happens to some degree. I guess they have to somewhat satisfy the romantic perception that most people have of the "Roaring 20's".

My only suggestion: maybe spend a bit more time on (realistic) character development (I've read a fair amount about the young Al Capone and Charles "Lucky" Luciano - and the characters on this show are weak cartoon versions)... and a bit less time showing tits & ass. But I guess the one audience hook that HBO has, that networks like AMC don't, is T&A.

I'll keep watching it though. I mean, at least it's better than 99% of the reality crap and dopey song & dance shows that pollute TV these days.

I watched the first episode of season one directed by Martin Scorsese. The narrative style and editing is reminiscent of Goodfellas. Imo Michael Pitt looks very much like Leo DiCaprio.

I'm surprised that no one has posted in this thread since the season finale was shown last Sunday. I thought it was pretty shocking and very entertaining. The last two episodes of this season were the best, IMO. But one thing that I have to say: HBO seems to have more shows that feature incest than any other movie network out there: Rome (Octavian and his sister, Octavia), Game of Thrones (Cersei and Jamie Lannister) and now Boardwalk Empire (Gillian and her son, Jimmy).

I won't spoil the finale of Boardwalk for anyone who is still waiting to watch it. But in the last couple of episodes I repeatedly said, "Damn! I didn't see THAT coming!" There is clearly a side to Nucky that I don't think anyone knew existed.

Great show!
