Bite the bullet - solutions for mass shootings

As long as people are allowed to own guns, you're not going to get rid of mass shootings. I'm not being glib, that's the only solution.

CAN that happen? Technically, yes. If sometime far into future enough public opinion is swayed and legislatures rescind the 2nd Amendment. And there's a total seizure or voluntary surrender.

Like that one Stallone, Wesley Snipes movie.

I don't have any intelligent solutions to stop mass shootings. This thread is also discussing gun control.[...]
[...]I'll tell you this, the person that comes up with the answer to this question, is probably going to win a Nobel prize.

Everything is open for debate. But I can't think of a simple yet effective solution either especially if you try to dig deep and see correlations everywhere. Apart from that you both have good points.

How then would you deal with the civil rights groups who claim you are targeting and profiling minorities when in reality you are only enforcing the law and many of the law breakers just happen to be minorities?

As opposed to just let it be and do nothing?

I do realize guns are part of an American 'culture' (not sure if that's the right word) and that's not going to change soon. If there is a reason to change it at all. So the way to approach this is in the US might be different than in Europe. But lessons can be learned from both.

There is only one solution to mass shootings: Ban Democrats/liberals from owning firearms. Would it be 100% effective? Maybe. But it would have prevented Sutherland, Orlando, Aurora, Mandalay Bay, the Dallas shootings last year and countless others.

Not sure if this is an AHOTY-attempt but as weird as it may sound that's actually not to far from the truth. According to some studies a majority of prisoners claim to be democrat, while contact with the criminal justice system "breeds distrust and alienates them from any political affiliation - the more extended the contact, the greater the alienation".

Apart from that I'm not sure shouting "mah freedom" and "mah rights" while taking these away from people with another political affiliation would be a very stabilizing move for a democracy. You might get one big mass shooting called civil war. Just saying.

Making the whole country a gun-free zone ? That will never happen.

There was a time when I was in favor of implementing UK, France or even Japan style gun-legislation in the US. Not anymore. Because the US is different from these countries, the culture is different, the menality is different, the History is different, the country itself is different....
But I do believe putting some limitations to what kind of weapons are legal and banning some people from owning weapons (not only guns but also weapons such as swords, daggers, katanas, nun-chuks, etc.), would result in decreases on issues such as mass-shooting, crime, suicide, etc.

but even a decrease in mass shootings wouldn't be a solution - as in solving the problem. Tell that to the families of those killed.

and what about weapons such as a 2-ton lorry on a crowded walkway? in sheer potential for number of casualties as we've already seen.

There's always going to be a nutter no matter what. There will always be a mass shooter, somebody who drives to fast, someone who'll avoid paying taxes, abuses children etc. Does that mean we shouldn't implement measures at all because we can't stop every single one of them?

and what about weapons such as a 2-ton lorry[...]

Yup, fair point. But when it comes to terrorists it's not only about guns but stopping their brainwashing and ideas

I think you covered all the reasonable solutions. Common sense background checks, restrictions on criminals, etc.
The single shot restriction certainly sounds good, but let's not forget they still haven't enacted a federal ban for bump stocks even after Vegas, and I feel like some entrepreneurial mind would find a similar solution for other guns.

So now we can discuss more drastic measures, right?
How about relaxing gun control? Make it cheaper & easier to get guns. It's said in many places (around the world) it's easier to get a gun than it is a cellphone. Imagine if they made guns as ubiquitous as phones, or drivers licences. We know the NRA won't have an issue with it since they flouted the idea of arming every schoolteacher in the country, and they often spout the mantra "The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun". So let's go all out. Make it "normal" for anyone over say, 16 to have a gun. Get rid of the stigma. Pacifists could be the new vegans.
Wouldn't criminals think twice before committing gun crimes if odds were everyone could fight back with their weapons? And even if they didn't, you would still have the average Joe able address the situation on their own.

Cost? Smartphones were only for the rich a couple decades ago, and now preschoolers have them.
Training? Treat it like driving; make it a right of passage for teenagers.

Half sarcastic, half serious. Wouldn't it be a viable solution, at least on several fronts?

You mean the family members they show us who are always smiling? The ones getting rich off their gofundme accounts?

Do you mean victims like this? Because this is the only one we've seen so far out of all the "vehicle attacks".

Well, just to keep an open mind an argument as this deserves the same respect as any other given argument, serious or not. After all some people argue that legalizing drugs might solve a lot of drug related problems and I suppose this is the same line of thought. But I doubt it would be much safer if everyone has a gun. Maybe a criminal would think twice if everyone could fight back. Or... maybe he wouldn't think at all and draw the first shot to make sure the other one can't fire back.
And would it be safer if anyone could pull a gun at any given moment whether it's in a drunken barfight or a spousal argument getting out of hand? People aren't necessarily bad guys but do stupid things none the less.

The easiest way to get a clue if this might work is to look at the data of which countries have the easiest/toughest laws, most/less gun ownership, etc and compare it with criminal activity/accidents involving guns. I'm to lazy but I have a feeling the numbers will tell something else. To make something like this work you would need a lot more to change.

The training part sounds like a good idea though especially when you have a nation that likes their guns

Apart from that hats off to you. Sarcastic or not, I like the out of the box thinking. :hatsoff:
