Billy Idol was, and is certainly an image with little substance. While it could be argued that his guitar-player is stupendous for his style, his style is certainly an acquired taste. Billy Idol is one of the first musicians that I purchased a music-disc from because I thought that he looked ‘cool,’ on the cover. After listening to his greatest hits disc, I have never been more disappointed before in my life. His physical-image didn’t fit the poor mans Chris Isaac/John Stamos type of music, and poor singing, that I was hearing.
The music was very flat, poppish, powerless, and some was like 1950’s doo-wop as opposed to the type of music that I was expecting. He almost appeared to be a caricature of rock-n-roll, which was riding on his image. My opinion of him reached a lower-apex when I purchased, ‘Cyperpunk.’ Again, the cover-art looked interesting. This music-disc has to be the strangest, most commercial, weirdest attempt at techno-music, which I have ever listened to. I will say that, ‘White Wedding,’ is my favorite MTV video, and I do believe that Billy Idol was ultra-fun as an MTV phenomenon. He seems like an unconventional, tough, funny, exciting, guy.
I am captivated by his ‘fuck-you’ attitude towards criticism. But I will say that I don’t think that he would have made it to the, ‘big-time,’ without superficial MTV, and their need for caricatures. Some of the lyrics on ‘Charmed Life’ are very well-crafted, captivating, and romantic. His new music-disc ‘Devils-Playground’ is a very vast improvement, both in his voice, and in the power of his guitar man.
