Soul and R & B are mutually exclusive in my book but artists like Jackie Wilson, James Brown, Otis Redding, etc were instrumental is developing Soul as a spinoff of R & B. My personal favorite is Wilson Pickett....his version of Mustang Sally is perhaps one of the best songs ever done by anyone anywhere. JB and of course Aretha Frankilin would have to be right there as well. Tough question for sure.
R & B? John Lee Hooker would be my choice.

Good topic!

To a true Soul and R + B lover like myself it is a very hard question. So many had their place in forming and mind blowing contributions.

Great post Jagger69. :glugglug:

It's good to be the king...
James Brown

......Ditto............

(although I've heard that Earth Wind & Fire's "Magic" act on stage was pretty good; and I would have loved to have seen George Clinton's "spaceship")

Which other could possibly be better than this selection ?

Re: Best Ever Soul/R&B Singer/Performer

Seeing as you start more polls than Prof V. after a break up, I would of thought you'd eventually learn to put "other" as an option.

Fuck other, if ya dont like whats there tuff titty :thefinger

Re: Best Ever Soul/R&B Singer/Performer

How come everyone on the list's male?

Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick, spring to mind on the female side.

Re: Best Ever Soul/R&B Singer/Performer

This is a male soul singer poll.

Since the headline says R & B which stands for rhythm and blues you should have had John Lee Hooker,Muddy Waters,B.B. King and Howlin´Wolf.
BUT it´s a perfect list for male soul singers.

Re: Best Ever Soul/R&B Singer/Performer

If we are just talking about pure singing,I don't know how Luther Vandross isn't on this list, but all around performer and showman would have to be James Brown.

Not my type of music at all.

But I have at times enjoyed the music of James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Aretha Franklin. It tells you something about them that they are able to please someone who doesn't even like the genre. :dunno:
