How about allowing bigger avatars (pixel and file size) just a modest increase, nothing to crash your browser.
might I suggest 100 - 110 pix and 400 - 500 kb? (making small gif animations can be fun)

Thank you for your suggestion but it is not something we have any plans for at the moment.

Well that's a shame. I believe a lot of members share the idea for bigger avatars. At least 100x100 pixel.
