depends of the car. In a muscle car, a hurst dual gate shifter can be very efficient especially on th 400s or ford c6s auto transmissions. The mopar a727 auto transmission is another automatic transmission to consider if you want a fast aceleration and quick shifting. Otherwise a ford toploader or a muncie m21-m22 or a mopar a833 heavy duty 4 speed transmission would be my pick for a muscle car.
One of the best transmissions in a luxury car I have driven was the tiptronic in the a8 and a8w12 and the mercedes automatic transmission in the 560sel from 1989.

Manuals for the time being but I suppose when i get older i'll prefer automatics

Manuals are fun, but for everyday driving I'll always take an auto. The constant clutching and shifting gets old real quick when you're in traffic or a hilly area, or where I live and there's a stinking stop sign on every fucking corner.
