ATMs: The Hidden Cost of Convenience

Ace Bandage

The one and only.
Oh my God, and Reagan was shot too! Honestly, how is this news? Read the material that comes with your card before you use it. Then you won't be surprised by these "hidden" fees.

This is NEWS? Did you just get your first debit card a few days ago? This is once again COMMON KNOWLEDGE. And how is it a hidden fee, if it is included in the papers that come with your bank card. All you have to do is read the information that they provide.

now now jasonk, we all know the majority of people don't bother reading/researching before doing anything these days. And then wonder why they're in the red all the time. (or losing their house)

That's the problem with people not reading the fine print. Or, even better, asking intelligent questions when they physically go to their bank to sign up for a bank card. Then suddenly it's news when people "figure this out."

You should see the fees banks charge US bank/debit cards when they're used at ATM machines in Europe. Now that one is fun since people don't bother to ASK what the fees are.

Atms are not the way they rip us off. Atms are hard to cover the cost on and I think they lose money on atm machines as a total.

Not so hidden when the withdraw screen clearly states "There will be a XX fee for this transaction, do you wish to continue?"
My bank, meanwhile, has three ATMs within walking distance of my place, so I've no excuse.

This is the best Hellraiser thread

In the U.S., they're not legally required to disclose these fees are they? They just do it "out of courtesy."

The fine print jargon in all financial literature and contracts is incomprehensible by anyone without a legal degree.

I think the monthly checking "maintenance fee" that banks assign to checking accounts is worse than these fees. My bank just informed me that they'll be assigning me a monthly fee because of "these difficult times" and the only way I won't pay this fee is if I keep a consistent balance of $2000 or more.....:mad:

Just having direct deposit isn't enough anymore.....

People sign a lot of things without actually reading it. Fees for ATMs have been around for over 20 years now. It should be nothing new to them. Teach them to blindly agree to anything without reading. Especially when it comes to something as important as their banking.

I just buy something at the store and get cash back.......I usually get two Gatorades or some chips, sure I still pay the two bucks that I would have paid to use the machine, but now at least I get a drink or some food out of it.

So technically it cost you MORE than 2 dollars to get your money.:dunno:

As everyone else has stated, the ATM fee is very visible to the individual drawing money. If you don’t want to pay the few dollar fee, don’t use an ATM.

E. Coli is the hidden cost of ATM convenience.

No fucking shit Captain Obvious, sheesh! It's sad to see your PSTD getting out of control and that's why you believe in and say absurd things you gather from Fox News and you regurgitate the bull crap you hear on Fox News here instead of hearing facts that I present to you simple-minded NeoCons.

THe purpose of this is to educate those who don't know the history of ATMs and for those who are in the know, to discuss how to resolve the problem of paying excessive fees rather then being complacent about it.

One way I avoid paying excessive ATM fees when I need to withdraw large sums of cashflow is I usually go to a local major supermarket or a pharmacy and buy some knick knack that's around a buck and pay with debit and tell the cashier that I'd like to withdraw some money honey. So instead of paying 2 or 3 dead presidents to get a ton of dead presidents from an ATM machine, I only spend a buck or so by purchasing something to snack on or drink and still get however much money I need son
