You can thank ProTools for manipulating her vocals into sounding even half-assed decent. Gone are the days of the actual "live" vocalists (well, aside from the odd band here and there who DOES have the ability to hold a tune or harmony) who can actually SING... instead we have manipulated, digitized, and multiple overdubbed layers and tracks.

The problem is that pop music producers are looking more for hot chicks who they can market rather than chicks who can sing. The same is done with guys, but not usually as much.

Britney and J'Lo can still sing better than Ashlee though. I watched some of her show on MTV and she's just brutal. Who ever producers her songs should win an award.

I saw a clip from Ashlee's Orange Bowl performance... you might be right. As bad as Britney and J-Lo are, I can't imagine they're half as bad as Ashlee. I mean, she voice was so bad I'm convinced I could've done better (and I couldn't sing well if my life depended on it. :1orglaugh ).

There's no doubt that that's the crux of the problem. In all truth, I don't even consider popstars like those mentioned above as being musicians. I consider music to be an artform, like painting or poetry. Manufactured popstars are not artists. They're more like people pretending to be artists.

I just downloaded the entire video off K@zaa... it's called "ashlee simpson orange bowl 2005" and is roughly 21 MB. I'm as critical of her as anyone, but in all fairness the audio clip I heard of her before was (when I said that even I could sing better) from the end of the song, where her voice was at its worst.

One interesting note now that I've seen the accompanying video component of the performance.... the way she was acting (I now understand Dirty Dog's "rock" comment - very funny BTW ) One thing I really loathe is somebody who's acting like he or she has an "edge" when I know nothing could be further from the truth. The way Ashlee dresses for the perforance, the way she tries to move like some sort badass rocker, the guys in her band trying to look cool and act tough, especially the one with the Mohawk (I haven't liked anybody with a mohawk since Rancid ). Then there was the "rough looking" dancers on stage with her, dressed like cheerleaders, and the large "A" with a circle around it on the wall behind Ashlee, which I'm sure will remind some of the video for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from Nirvana, although I assume the reference is to the novel, "The Scarlet Letter." It waa a poignant reference with regards to Nirvana video, with Ashlee, just another example of how everything she says or does is contrived for our benefit.
